Basic issue is to allow central IT groups to distribute and automatically install new software and updates to far flung corporate users, the MS Office software products contain code that allows them to run a program in the background on the receiver's computer. Very handy for the IT group and the user but it also can be a wide open pathway to that computer for bad guys. Hence, what started as a "feature" has turned into a primary attack mode for unsuspecting home users. Best security protocol is never open a MS Office attachment unless you know the sender and confirm with them ahead of time that they intended to send the attachment to you.
BTW, the best of the corporate IT jocks figured out how to plug these potential holes a long time ago but unless you have the skills to do so yourself, best use security software as well.

I have used MS Office on dozens of computers for as long as it has been available. Never had a problem. Basic virus and spamware protection are all
you need. Malwarebytes, Microsoft Security Essentials, and SuperAntiSpyware, all free, will stop anything. Don't be alarmist and say that Office is
bad and PC's are dangerous. It just isn't true.
