The misses started to complain about exhaust smel today. Ya well, we have a look when we ll come at our destination. But she was not happy and I started to smell it as well, not exhaust, but burning oil. Found a parking spot and yes, oil was running and made a small pool rather fast. Not good. Engine oil.

Not the pan, filter can be tightened a bit, not the oil lines. But wait that oilfilter looks a bit funny, like a stone hit it, yes could be that. Took of the fiter, yes a tiny hole that drip oil, must be more with the engine running.

Ofcourse there are oilfilters in with the spare parts, in with the new fiter, add a quart of oil and off we went.
Now at the campsite, no oil dripping. All well. But the could have gone so wrong

It was probably a Fram. You can't trust those Fram filters. They'll
ruin your engine every time.

Just sayin'...

Bill, That means pick a new topic in the little box in the right hand corner. Then a new dialog will open up and you can title your topic, then start your first message. This allows us to answer messages in their correct topic, instead of being lost in the great shuffle.

When changing the oil filter I rarely replace the cooler gasket - but worse than that - I generally fail to check how tight the cooler adapter is and it ends up leaking. I know better, yet somehow I don’t.

Larry,

If you do change the gasket between the oil filter and oil cooler adapters you need to review this album:

Rob,

That is an excellent presentation of oil filter adapter gaskets. I now need to order up a few Parker gaskets to keep on hand.

Rob,

Do I understand the photos correctly that the typical oil filter gasket is too think now allowing metal to metal contact allowing the gasket to deform and leak over time?

thanks

PS where did you get the correct gaskets? how much?

Todd,

Yes, if you use the seal out of an oil filter it will "cold flow" as shown in the last photo in the album and it will seep.

I got the Dorman kit from O'Reilly's, IIRC it was around $5 and you get three seals.

I got the Parker Hannifin seal from a company in Houston for about a buck each. The minimum order was $20 so I got a bunch of them.
I brought half of them back to Australia last year and intend to give the rest away at rallies / conventions.

Larry,

Thanks but actually you only need one of the Dorman kits (has 3 seals in it) or two Parker O-rings; one to install and one just in
case it leaks which is unlikely as you will have a metal to metal fit and the "nut" that holds them together is torqued to 50 ft lb
(check the manual on that number).

Regards,
Rob M.

I went to local Parker store for this gasket. They found it, and gave it to me for free. Said to do the paperwork would cost more than the gasket.
Your mileage may vary

LOL I ran into the same thing. I think it would have cost 25¢ Not
worth the paper work. It took them 20 min to find it.
