Hi all,

I think I'm going to follow Ken H's (and other's) lead and remove my ladder,
luggage rack and pod. Can anyone educate me on what I will find when I
remove these items? Nutserts? Holes?

What is the best way to fill any remaining holes in preparation for paint?

Thanks in advance,

Guy Lopes

When I removed the pod, I simply filled the nutserts with an automotive seal sealer, (silicone won't take paint) and sealed around them as well.
Here is a pic of the finished roof. If you look close, you can see the eight former spots.

R.D. makes a good point. Once the ladder is off you won't be seeing the roof all that often. Out of sight, out of mind.

I was a little more undecided so I put the six pod screws back in with sealant around them. I can say that I am not missing the pod much.

The coolest part occurred when I was on top of the coach in its barn. I had the six pod screws out and was sort of wondering how Ruth and I would lift the pod over the edge. About that time I bumped my shoulder on a joist and ended up sliding the pod up and onto two "rafters". I was sort of proud of myself. At times I forget it is up there.

My pod is full of stuff I need, so it's staying put. The ladder is required for access. The current inventory: four camp chairs, two 50" hoses, two 10' sewer hoses, a two step foldup ladder, 100' of 30 amp extension, and some small fittings - water Y, sewer adapter, etc. There's no place in the coach for them.
However, the top of my pod is cracked. If anyone close by or going to one of the upcoming rallies is removing theirs, I'll take it off your hands (I'll even take it off your coach) if it's in better condition.

Rethink it??? When the day comes I'm not competent to climb the ladder and hold the rails - and that day will surely come albeit no time soon I hope - I will not consider myself confident to drive the GMC either. At that point I';ll divest myself of it with the pod and ladder still attached. I took a pretty good spill yesterday pulling limbs off the wires here. I know how to take a fall, years of BWDs yanking me down have taught me. Another point to check at most of our age - my sawbones does a bone density check on me every couple of years. So far, it's normal... but osteoporosis is silent and painless until you break something weakened by it. It's correctable if you know it exists. Have yourself checked regularly.

A supplement proven in tests to help ward off osteoporosis is Strontium Citrate. One such product is marketed by "Doctor's Best" as "Strontium Bone Maker" and my wife and I have been taking it for a couple of years now. It appears that our feet and legs have gained strength since we started. I believe there is also a variety marketed as "Bone Builder."

You are cautioned to NOT take this product simultaneously with a calcium booster such as Citracal (Calcium Citrate) or Calcium Carbonate. You should also not take it at the same time that you eat or drink dairy products. What I have read says there is some sort of "fight" between those two if taken at the same time.

Seems to work for us.

Guy:
When my coach was being repainted, I decided not to put the ladder / rails / and storage pod back on the roof. I like the clean lines of the coach without in being cluttered with all that on the roof. On another note Guy, have you found anything yet that you want to use for your awning instead of the Zip Dee? I too would like something as unobtrusive as possible for an awning, and the Zip Dee at 5 grand is a bit rich for my blood.

Lemme point out to those concerned about a fall - and I appreciate the concern - many if not most of the coaches in pictures have pods which appear to have the hinges on one side, and open from the side. That setup would be a great way to fall and bust your a$$. Mine is hinged on the front and opens from the rear, a much safer setup. If I had a side opening pod, I'd turn it 90 degrees if it would fit, or remove it and get one that would fit.

David,

I too like the cleaner looks without all of the hardware up there (like Ken Henderson's). More importantly, while I don't have any problems on the roof of my GMC now, I still don't like going up there now at 52; I can just imagine that the experience will be less than enjoyable ten years from now. I doubt I'll ever go up there in just a few years. Better to rid myself of the eyesore and weight now.

I haven't come up with an awning solution yet. I understand that Henderson's sleek awning was imported by a company here in the U.S., but I'll have to search for the company name. I intend to contact that company and if necessary try to arrange a group buy for 23' and 26' coaches. I'm sorry that's no help for you now. If you discover anything please let me know.

Your new Mac dash on the Pose looks great!

Guy

When my coach was being repainted, I decided not to put the ladder / rails / and storage pod back on the roof. I like the clean lines of the coach without in being cluttered with all that on the roof. On another note Guy, have you found anything yet that you want to use for your awning instead of the Zip Dee? I too would like something as unobtrusive as possible for an awning, and the Zip Dee at 5 grand is a bit rich for my blood.

Guy,

The Omnistor awnings like mine were imported from Belgium by Carefree of
Colorado in cooperation with Richard G. Floyd (rgf) of Vancouver Island. I
don't think Richard fools with them any longer. However, I have over the
past couple of years seen the same or very similar awnings on some modern
US-made coaches. I doubt that they are a regular offering of CofC but are
specifically imported for those manufacturers.

Our awnings were imported (as, apparently, are many of CofC's products)
without fabric for tariff savings. They then install US-made fabrics --
which are available in a much wider variety than offered in Europe.

I hope you have luck getting CofC to cooperate; I really like our awning
despite wishing it deployed more horizontally before I get beneath it and
deploy the supports.

Oh, there's a similar awning made in Italy by Fiamma -- their US
headquarters are in Orlando. When I visited them before finding Omnistor,
they had only vertical box awnings (like offered by CofC and others) but I
think I've seen that they've since introduced a more tapered box like
Omnistor's.

Hope that helps,

Ken H

Ken,

Thank you, that's exactly the information that I had saved but which now eludes me.

I see that CofC sells one awning called the Freedom Roof mount Awning. It seems to have a similar profile to yours. The max length listed is only 13'1" with a max opening of a little over 8'. Web Page Here - http://www.carefreeofcolorado.com/products/freedom-roof-mount.html

Fiama has a model that looks similar. Their F65 Eagle has that familiar teardrop-type shape with a mount that may work. 13'9" long with a projection of 8'2". Web Page Here - http://www.fiammausa.com/products/awnings.asp?Fam=F02

Both of these examples have manual and 12v electric options.

I remember that someone warned me that the length and mounting points on the awning are important to align so that it is mounted to a structural member of the GMC roof vs simply bolting it to the skin.

I will contact CofC and Fiama tomorrow to begin investigating any options.

Thank you again,
