These two quotes from the March 2015 issue of Motorhome mag may sound familiar to you:'
"Thor Motor Coach's Recreational Utility Vehicle........25.6' long....is sized like a large SUV and drives like one, but offers the convenience and amenities of a mortorhome......and has a GVW of 12,500 pounds"
"Holiday Rambler TREK....is focused on the outdoor enthusiast - that younger demographic that wants to get outdoors....and doesn't want a 35 or 40 foot rig.....they want a 26 footer that they can take just about anywhere, but that gives more space than you'd typically get in 26 feet.....GVW 16,000#"
Sounds a lot like the original GMC ads. These are not van conversions, these are purpose built motorhomes aiming at something other than the rolling condo crowd. And, they are offered at price points in the low to mid $100,000 range which would be around $14,000 to $16,000 in 1970 money. Maybe it is the 1970's repeating itself. Our late 78 Royale had an MSRP of over $45,000 which in today's money would be over $300,000. Makes fully restoring a GMC to compete with these new offerings sound like a bargain.
Now if I can just get through the over cooling and fan clutch/plastic fan issues with the new engine in the Clasco.........
