The new crop of LED work lights are quite impressive for light output and cost about the same as replacement LED tubes. I have both Snap-on brand (~$35 quantity one) and no name Chinese versions (~$20). The Snap-0n is definitely brighter. I may try a distributed bank of these when I build the garage for our second GMC. I have 6 CFL photo bulbs (150 watt equiv if I remember correctly) in our current garage and they do an adequate job of overall illumination in that application. The LED work lights appear to put out even more light so a bank of 6 to 10 should be enough.

Sean,
How do the LED 4' tubes compare (light output wise) to the T8 &T12 tubes they replace? I've been looking at several different LED tube replacements and so far haven't been impressed with the light output. I'm hard to please in this area as I've played with overdriven fluorescents for my aquariums and was impressed with the amount of light output. Of course life span and heat become a problem with overdriven fluorescents. Not something I would do for my warehouse lighting.

I'm not that concerned with the cost of chunking the ballast with the bulb, or the warm up time in a cold shop. Every time I have to mess with a blinking or dead lamp, I end up wasting a couple hours at least. Life is too short.

Yeah, LEDs might be the future but it isn't here yet imo and I'm not that concerned with energy conservation. Even the old tech T12s don't use that much power and TVA power is cheap.

Kerry, not challenging your choices, just sharing my experiences.

I don't know how cold you let your shop go. my work shop stays well above freezing, but my unheated, un-insulated warehouse stays close to outdoor temps which get well below freezing. My experience with the CF bulbs in the cold hasn't been good. I installed some as exterior soffit lighting (timer controlled) on my house, and was replacing them yearly due to failure. They would take 5-10 minutes to reach full brightness at 0°f or colder. The LEDs have now been there for 4 years with no issues.

I have also found that the damned CF bulbs are more fragile in my shop than the tube fluorescents, mainly because they hang lower from the ceiling. Both need closed fixtures to be safe from impact. When occasionally manipulating an extra long item, I have bumped the lights if I wasn't paying attention.

As you indicated, and I agree, repetitively fixing unreliable lighting is frustrating and time consuming. cf bulbs are a fast and cheap solution that works well as long as you don't break the bulbs. In some areas of my shop and warehouse, light replacement requires moving items to enable me to access the lightsocket. Like you, this can take several hours at times and I'd rather be doing something else.

The LED panels solve most of these issues by being low profile, and maintenance free. At the moment, they are more costly than CF bulbs, but if you factor in the cost of a fixture to protect the bulb, the costs are not that far apart.

I have several of those LED Work lights as well. They would work well for shop lighting if you can get them cheap enough and are willing to cobble up the wiring and mounting interface. I've been using one over my lathe and love the fact it doesn't project any heat like the halogen floods do.

The LEDs are nice but the same number of lumens as two 27W CFL (100W equivalent) for $3 each and $3 more for the one time purchase of the porcelain bases. 12 bucks. Yeah you might be able to break them if you hit them. I have 10' to 16' ceilings so I'm not as concerned.
