On my trip from hell back to Jersey from Florida I had fuel smell issues. Started with what was thought to be a gas cap but continued to get worse. While repairing the exhaust system that blew off due to backfire when HEI module failed, I saw a drip from the fuel pump. After I located a replacement fuel pump found that old one was failing slowly, first with a leak from the body. You might want to look at your mechanical fuel pump if you still have one.

Electric fuel pumps only. Mechanical one removed. I suspect the vent tube on top of the tank.
