So me and my instructor went out and did some steep turns (45), did some slow flight on our way back to the airport. Were on the 45 for the DW and he says give me 2 touch and goes and a full stop landing in the parking area and you are gonna go solo.
He signed my logbook and my medical certificate and said I'll see you when you get back.
Start the plane (1979 Cessna 172N w/180hp Lycoming N5520D), taxi down to the run up area.
Start my "Before Takeoff" checklist, get down to the run up for mag check.
1700 RPM, Left mag, little drop in the RPM, back to both. Left and then Right mag........ Right Mag........ Chug, Chug, Chug. 250 drop on the RPMs.
Well shit.
Back to both mags, 1200 RPM, release the parking brake, taxi back to the hangar.
I still don't know if I should laugh or cry. I would appreciate suggestions on that though.

Best finding that out in the run up than needing it on the climb out.

Jared,
My flight instructor said something to me that stuck: "Far better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than to be in the air wishing you were on the ground." There will be another magneto and another day.
Wear the shirt for the next time.

I'm going to wear the same shirt on Saturday that I did today.
Good words though. That is why you do the run up. Make sure you have a running airplane.
Still upset though.
More likely it was a fouled plug than a bad mag.

Certainly could happen in a GMC MH. They don't fly though, therefore they don't have twin magnetos. The dual magnetos is a fail safe. You have a redundant system in a piston powered airplane. 2 engine driven Magnetos, normally you fly on both. If one fails you still have one to make it to an airport.
What happens when you lose the single distributor in our MH's........
Jared
Edit, that is also why I started this topic as NON GMC.

You coast to the side of the road and sip a cold beverage while reading the latest issue of Flying magazine, and wait for the AAA tow. That's what.

While it could be a mag, there is a good chance it is a lead fouled plug. That is a very common occurrence. since they force us to use 100 Low Lead fuel. 100 LL is really 4 ties the lead content of 80/87 that most engines use. If it is lead fouling, usually a full power run up and leaning out the mixture will clear the fouled plug.
I pulled many, many plugs since the advent of 100LL fuel and the elimination of 80/87. I picked the lead out of many of them with a pick. Now I just do the above procedure and that cleans them out in about 15 seconds. I learned to taxi lean and then go full rich just prior to take off. It helps to reduce the incidence of fouling.
I forget what engine (Continental or Lycoming) is in a 1979 172 and what octane fuel it requires. In might be 80/87 or 93. I'm sure it was not 100. It might also be a bad mag.
Any way, you did the right thing by parking it and letting someone figure out what the problem is. You can always do that solo tomorrow. Oh yes, the first thing you will notice solo is how much quicker the plane gets off of the ground and climbs with that other person missing in the right seat.

Jared,
Giggle and put this down in your collection of stories.
My instructor had a personal requirement that his students have some hood time before the check ride. This was his person idea as the climate (eastern Connecticut) was prone to sudden fog. We were working on an instrument approach when TSHTF... Over the numbers I could see maybe a quarter of the runway... Missed approach... Call in... Set up again... So much cross wind now that I lost the GP before the threshold..... Set up again High over the numbers this time, but I got it right and put her down, Kind of hard, kind of bouncy and way off center, but down. Getting back the hanger was a trip on its own.
I tried to apologized to Ted (my instructor). As I started he said, "Don't" and stopped me to say, "A good landing is one you can walk away from. If you can use the same plane to take off, that is a great landing. Remember, we don't belong in the sky, it will throw you down any chance it gets. Don't give it that chance."
And you did not give it that chance. That is the makings of a good pilot.

You used your better judgement and taxied back in. That is also part of being a good pilot, not just skill.

Jared I'm pleased to see you make the proper choice(s) even when there's pressure to go on. I'll fly with you. Ken B has the move, ask your instructor to demonstrate it for you. The engine in the two seat Americans is famous for that (0-235) probably for the same reason. It used to be standard practice on the way out to the runup to goose it and lean the piss out of it for a moment, then to do the heat and mag check. I've a lot (relatively) of time in the Hawk, but all of it is behind either the 145hp Continental o-300 or the 150 Lyc (o-320). Never flew one with a 180 in it. And remember the three most useless things in aviation: The air above you, the runway behind you, and the gas in the truck.
Keep em flying,
