Contrary to some folks issues, I ran my Onan for the first extended run yesterday with the new exhaust. On the second run, when I hit the shutdown switch on the genset, it acted like it wanted to engage the starter and wouldn't shut down. I eventually disconnected the power to the fuel pump, but any idea what might cause this?

Did you try the switch on the side of the Onan or just the one inside?

Well, that was a stupid question on my part as you said you hit the switch on the genset. DUH! So the flip side question, did you try it from inside? Sounds like a wiring mixup or perhaps the connectors from the top and bottom of the switch are touching.

Randy,

Ya gotta hold it in until it shuts off completely.
If you need another board to try it out, I have the old one out of my onan. It worked when I replaced it. The problem I was having was external to the board.

Randy,

Take Chris Up on his offer.
That board pretty much has to have a problem. It can probably be repaired.

Thanks. Let me try it again tomorrow. I didn't hold it any longer than I heard starter teeth gnashing the flywheel. The battery was on its way out, so maybe it needs battery power to shut down properly. If it does it again, I'll come get it. Thanks again!

Randy,

Don't try too hard.
The starter should not be engaging at all.

My Onan starter grinds on the flywheel. Something I plan on fixing one day. Once I started the Onan and the starter would not disengage and the Onan would not turn off. I think that if the stater hangs up on the flywheel it creates some sort of feedback loop.

Dan,

That is a common symptom of a broken starter bracket.

That switch on the Onan board is 2 way momentary center off switch. Are you sure that you pressed it in the correct direction when trying to turn it off?

Did you start it from the remote and try to turn it off from the board? Possibly the remote start switch is sticking.

No, this is a retrofit installation from my Kohler and I haven't hooked up the remote yet. Far from the plug-n-play I had imagined when I started this, but still probably an improvement.

You can easily check for broken starter bracket by grabbing the end of the starter and seeing if the starter will move with you tugging or pushing on it. If it moves, the bracket is most likely broken. JmK has a replacement bracket that will not fail.

Well it ran and charged the battery and shut down cleanly, so maybe that was a one-off.

I can't stop smiling Very Happy I've got an ONAN and it's working!

I hesitate to hijack this thread any further, but unfortunately my bracket seems to be fine. If I ever get a warm day or two I will pull the starter and bendix and try to clean it up. New starters are a little spendy.

Better, you've got an Onan Emerald and it's working! Congratulations on toughing it out and working out the bugs (and for giving me a local resource to take some measurements if my Emerald ever acts up). Wink

Randy--didn't you install a newer Onan? I think most of the folks here are trying to diagnose a power drawer.
