My 74 coach has a Norcold refrigerator that has worked just fine for the two years I've owned it. I'm a full timer so it's on all the time but yesterday the inside was room temperature but the display seemed normal. I turned it off and back on and it turned off and came back on. I checked an hour later and still no cooling. Is it toast or does someone know how to resurrect this thing?

I lost a fridge in my last 76 coach and replaced it with a Dometic. Everyone says that was a mistake. I should have bought a Norcold. I don't know.

Which model? Is it electric only or electric/gas? If it is both, have you tried it in both modes?

Lance,

The OE reefer from GMC in that time was a Norcold AC/DC. If that is what it is it may be salvageable, it also my be toast. If it is electric, pull it out (if you don't have a door) and plug it in. Can you feel vibration in the can on the back? If it is vibrating, and not cooling. It is a confirmed kill. If it is not vibrating, it could be an inverter problem. This can possibly be repaired.

If it is a gas and electric absorption unit, confirm that it is drawing power on the AC and the flame lights on gas. If those are true, pull it out and stand it on its head for a day. Then turn it right side up and let it sit a few hours before you power it up. If it cools now, you lucked out.
If when you were pulling it out, you smelled ammonia, then it is tote. Rebuilt cooling units cost about half of new.

The old Norcold units with the swing motor were a quality unit. So were the
Dometic units built in Sweden. The newer Norcold absorbtion units, IN MY
OPINION, are not as good as the swing motor units. The same thing can be
said for the Non Swedish built Dometic units. But the Dometic units have a
much better warranty policy than the Norcold does. You can ask Ron Clark
about his experience with Norcold warranty, or the lack of it. The shape of
the GMC side walls will prevent you from installing the Norcold exactly
like their instructions say, and if you fail to install them EXACTLY, they
will not warranty them. Yet they have no problems selling you one that is
an exact fit for the original one. You might be able to have your original
Norcold repaired, there is a gentleman in Amish country that does a great
job with them. I don't know his name but, many people in the eastern part
of the US use his services, and perhaps they will chime in here.

I suspect we are NOT "talking" about a swing motor NORCOLD here as I don't
believe they have any display.
