I've had my coach for 32 years & I used to get all my parts from Cinnabar
before I knew about the Jim's,
A few years back, I took my coach to Cinnabar for an engine, six wheel
alignment, new blinds & surrounds.
The blinds & surrounds turned out beautiful but the six wheel alignment
left a little to be desired as it didn't handle any better than when I
brought it in.
When the mechanic had the engine installed & took it for a test drive.
As soon as he pulled onto the highway it started to rap & miss.
When he brought it back to the shop, he found # 8 exhaust valve was frozen
closed
& the push rod was bent & the lifter popped out of it's hole.
He changed the head without removing the intake manifold. I had never have
seen it done that way.
I never have trusted that engine ever since & it now has a little over
45,000
miles on it & is starting to lose about 1 quart of oil every 300 miles.
It doesn't smoke out the exhaust so I think it is leaking around the pan
gasket or seals as I have oil covering the pan area.
I will clean that area with brake cleaner & spray foot powder on it to see
where the oil is coming from.
It cost me $12,000.00 that time & I never went back.
I agree that Wes does not contribute anything to this community.
That's my story & I'm sticking to it.

Wes bought all the GMC Motorhome parts, rights, etc. when GM closed up the production line. Cinnabar has many new old stock parts.
Wes is very opinionated and has a closed mind. To my knowledge, he adds little to the general field of knowledge about the GMC Motorhome. He does not frequent the forum.

I too will buy some parts from them when I am in hurry. I like to call them to ask about a part or service when researching things for my GMC. I find that they seem to always be 50% higher than from other sources. However, despite that, I like most of the people there that I have met. They do have hard to get parts and their service as far as shipping is very good. My neighbor had an engine replaced about 1998 that went south a year later. They replaced it at no charge. That was when Ivan Henderson their service manger was still there. Now they would probably not be as easy to work with.

Wes seems to be the problem with his "it's my way or you can hit the highway" attitude.

One of my memories of Wes, was back about 1999 I called him about some topic that was being discussed at the time on the GMCnet. His response to me about the internet and groups like the GMCnet list was that "the internet is a fad" and "that it will soon disappear" and that the content there is "all a bunch of rumors not based in fact". I think he is probably still hoping the internet will go away.

Tom,

I agree with points 1), 2), 3), and 5) below.

I disagree with point 4) if you click on this link: http://www.thegmcmotorhomepeople.com/coachtalk/ you will be taken to:

GMC Motorhome News Coach Talk by Wes Caughlin

Coach Talk Subject Index

Below is an alphabetical list of "Coach Talk" articles (624 Subjects) from GMC Motorhome News Issue Numbers 1-65 (September 1994 -
December 2010). These issues may be ordered by contacting us at 810-648-2444.

I have a collection of a lot of these Newsletters and they are chock a block full of information about the GMC. They are (as you
noted) Wes's take on the subjects and as Richard has noted he's a "my way or the highway" kinda guy. However, one should take into
consideration that he probably gets heaps of calls from GMC owners that think they "KNOW" what they're talking about but really
don't have a clue! We never read messages here like that do we? ;-)

It should be noted that while these articles may be a great resource, you can't even preview them without buying them. That does not make them very helpful, especially when compared to the wealth of free information available here.

David,

Sorry mate you're incorrect.

http://www.thegmcmotorhomepeople.com/news/?page=archive

As you can see you can preview the first page. Please note that I DID NOT try every one so I don't know if ALL of them can be
previewed.

As far as it not being free, Cinnabar is a BUSINESS not a philanthropic organization. :-)

Free information. I've always been cautious about free, especially when
it includes personal opinions, some of which are based on experience and
other on just off the cuff thinking. On top of that, very often I've
read the "just what I did" things that also doesn't make it right or
supportable across a variety of situations.

I've never used Cinnabar but I've never faulted them for wanting to stay
in business and do good work. I've also admired every tasteful rebuild,
remodel, or repaint that they ever did. A business doesn't stay in
business if it isn't doing things correctly and well, which happens to
involve money.

As Rob pointed out, they aren't a philanthropic organization. If we were
all retired from philanthropic organizations we would likely have no
retirement income. I guess for some people, they want a communistic way
of doing things in a capitalistic society. What an oxymoron!

Back in the old days, there was the GMC Marketplace. I have almost ALL of those, maybe I do have them all, frankly I don't know. However I PAID for that subscription, lots of great stories and articles. This was before the internet got "hot" and to get info on ownership, you waited by the mailbox, remember????

Wes is an opinionated guy, I guess, an "engineer type", but was always helpful, as I recall. He wrote for Motorhome magazine as well. He is probably not the charismatic type that the two Jim's are, but I see no need to disparage someone who is also one of our "providers". Back in the day, I subscribed to his newsletters. Pretty good stuff.....and I PAID for that privilege.

There was a letter to the editor in todays "Daily Wipe", bemoaning George Will for not mentioning todays lower wages were based on the government not raising the federal minimum wage, and that businesses were "only interested in making a profit".....HELLO....ANYONE HOME IN THERE???? Geeesh!!!

My coach was restored by Clarence Buskirk before he sold the operation to Wes. After that Cinnabar did quite a bit of work for me and it was all first class. Wes spent most of his time on the west coast and later returned to Michigan and became more involved in the business. Wes has what I would call an akward personality, but he did participate in Michigan rallies and had some very extravagant parties. Although his public participation is much different than the 2 Jim's, I don't think he is getting rich off the GMC community. I would hate to see him get out of the business.

The newsletter was a yearly subscription delivered usually 6 times a year ? by snail mail in nicely printed form. I think some of his "stubbornness" has to do with safety in vehicle systems. One of those was their position on tires where all steel like XPS Rib is the only accepable tire. He told me that LRE ragwalls did not have the sidewall stiffnes the GMC needed, but I had already bought LTXs.

My only "complaint" about Cinnabar is their lack of face-to-face
marketing. By that I mean showing up every three years at a large rally
somewhere. Of course, I am fully aware that rally attendance is like
doing a trade show -- a lot of blow for no incoming dough. Most
businesses show up where it seems profitable. But, if those present
don't buy from you or send business your way, there is no justified
sense in going. Since a good bit of this crowd squeaks when they walk
certain vendors may be better off, financially, getting work done that
someone will pay for.
