[GMCnet] Coca-Cola GMC and GMCMI Rapid City [message #270715] |
Thu, 29 January 2015 07:21 |
|
As some of you know, I have done the GMCMI theme graphic for some time.
When the location of a future convention is confirmed, Kim contacts me
and I get to work on developing a graphic. Of course, there's always a
GMC motorhome on it in some way. Nearly a year ago she let me know of
two conventions; the one at Patterson, Louisiana and the one at Rapid
City.
For the Rapid City theme I decided that an image of Mt. Rushmore needed
to be on it in addition to a GMC. I also thought it would be fitting to
throw in a soaring eagle and patriotic bunting for the USA. I decided
the message should be American Legacy and went to work.
Well, what can be more American than Coca-Cola unless it's apple pie (or
for our Southerners, Moon Pie)? Hence, a modified image of the GadAbout
was used. You can see it here.
http://www.songerconsulting.net/gmcmhart/convgraphics/
By the way, if that image were to be enlarged you'd see that I changed
the model name of the coach to GetAbout. No direct infringement on
licensing issues there. And, just like the other graphics, the work was
done in Adobe Illustrator.

I forgot to add. If you scroll down and look under the Rapid City
graphic you'll see the GMC decked out in LSU colors for the Patterson
convention coming up shortly. I hope this doesn't offend fans of Tulane
but the SEC draws more attention in our home since my wife yells "Go
Dawgs" when watching Georgia play football on TV.

Both look great, Byron. Bob and I have 7 of the Singer-designed t-shirts.
The ARE collectibles, too. Thanks for your creativity.

Mike,
Interesting comment.
When Canada takes over Detroit and assumes responsibility for GMC then
the GMC MotorHome has a chance of being declared a Canadian legacy. When
Canada absorbs North and South Dakota into it's borders and takes over
the Mount Rushmore National Monument, then that, too, has a chance of
becoming a Canadian legacy assuming Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and
Lincoln don't rise up and protest. At that point, of course, I'll be
glad to do a design with the red maple leaf. However, as I think more
about it, perhaps a rally should be hosted in Toronto, eh? Would be a
good idea for all the GMCers to get their passports made so they can get
back to the USA.
Cheers.

Yeesh. Not sure Mike's comment deserved that broadside. I get you are proud of your work Byron, and I'm sure you worked really hard on it, and I think it looks great. But Mike does bring up a valid point. It is GMCMI with the "I" being International. Having an overly American patriotic theme is a little incongruous with the name and purpose of the club.
I love the logo, and certainly don't have an issue with it, but from a certain point of view there is a valid idea to be considered in Mike's question.

Being part of the international crowd in here, I did not take any
offence with the drawing at all. The whole story about it with Mt
Rushmore and the associations with the US national signs make sense to me.

I'm kinda thinking that the winter "blah's" or "seasonal affective
disorder" perhaps might be pervasive throughout GMC land. Lotta people on
edge about a lot of topics. No good reason for it, it just kinda creeps in
with the cold and snow. They call it cabin fever in Alaska. Whatcha think?

Humor, Jeremy, it's all humor. That's why I put in the "cheers" part.
The "eh" part was there for that, too.
On the serious side, however, an International rally across the border
would be a good idea. It would also be a real headache to get all that
equipment shipped to Canada. And, some guys would have to leave their
guns behind.
More on the serious side. Rapid City is now billing itself as the City
of Presidents. It is impressive to see how they have carried this out.
There are bronze statues on every corner of two streets in a downtown
section. This was just carrying that theme out. I did the same for every
graphic -- there is some hint of the local history in all of them if not
obvious statements.
In Wisconsin we had an Oktoberfest. I'm not German but I wasn't
offended. In Iowa, where they are proud of the barns, a barn and a
take-off on American Gothic was in the theme graphic. I'm not a farmer
and I wasn't offended. For the current and past rallies in Louisiana
there are alligators and cypress trees with hanging moss as well as the
feathers and beads related to Mardi Gras. I'm not Cajun… you get the
point.
There really should be no offense taken by the graphic. The GMC,
presidents, etc. are all American legacies and should cause no offense.
If there were a rally to materialize in Toronto, Quebec, or Calgary
guess what local flavor would be on the theme graphic?
Yes, GMCMI is made up of members from the USA, Canada, and other
countries. The leadership makes sure to have the flags represented and
the national anthems sung. It's a part of the legacy of being in GMCMI.
But, your reprimand is well taken. Maybe I should have said LOLROTF or
something beside "cheers."

I hate it when I leave something out.
Talk about offense. Last year's rally in Montgomery, TX is a classic
example. I was told. in no uncertain terms, to put the Lone Star and
Texas outline in flag colors on the graphic. The GMC wearing the cowboy
hat was my idea. I'm not from Texas nut I did it anyway.
Of course there was the Peanut couple for the rally in Dothan, the
peanut capital of the US. For Shawnee, OK I had a Native American shield
with feathers. Goshen, of course, had a sign warning of a horse and
buggy for being in Amish country plus the covered bridge.
All of those theme graphics are closely tied to the region. They reflect
a part of who we are.

Jeremy,
Have you been to a recent GMCMI Convention? At most we start with may start with the Star Spangled Banner, but then go on to Oh, Canada and Advance Australia Fair. We ever run some of the programs in their native languages (sort of).

Two Dothan conventions Matt. And as I said, I have no problem with the design but I thought Mike's comment was worth thinking about. That's all. Is it logical to do an all out America theme for an international club? Celebrating local landmarks makes perfect sense, and Byron's designs are great. But logically does the international convention need a theme of "American Legacy"? It's a topic worth thinking about but certainly not one to get upset over.

After thinking about this for a half hour, I'm not quite sure what to
think.
1) What was the real thing behind what Mike wrote. He has yet to speak
up saying whether he was critical, questioning, or just throwing out a
remark offhandedly.
2) My wife and I are staying in an RV resort that has a significant
number of residents from Quebec; about 30%. When we recently celebrated
the park's 25th anniversary we had the Canadian and US flags present and
sang, oddly enough, God Bless America and O Canada.
3) I'll reiterate, if it were possible to have a rally in Ottawa (the
logistical nightmare makes it very, very difficult -- ask me how I know)
you can bet your $2 coin that there would be something of a patriot
nature for the Canadians on the graphic, maybe even in French and
English. I'd respect their right to feel patriotic and join with them.
4) I fail to see that the theme, American Legacy, is so "all out
American" as you put it. Am I missing something?
5) Historic American values are being questioned today. There is no
doubt about that. Though I am an individual that celebrates diversity I
also celebrate responsibility when it comes to interaction with other
humans. That being said, it is difficult for me to go to Rapid City and
Mt. Rushmore and not feel something patriotic. Yes, the USA has done
some things to be ashamed of but I believe we've also gotten more right
than we've gotten wrong. We don't need to feel like we have to stand
down.
6) I firmly feel that the GMC TZE is a part of a distinctly American
legacy just as the Mustang, Corvette, etc. They came from an automotive
industry that grew up in the USA with Henry Ford as a leader. GMCMI
isn't about celebrating Honda or BMW.
Just doing some thinking -- in writing -- but I could be the only one
that feels as I do.
