Some of my friends know that I have been having back problems for the last three months or so and its getting worse every week.

X-rays and an MRI show damage to 4 vertebrae in my lumbar (lower back) region. Probably caused by arthritis.

Lying down relieves the pain so I've been spending a lot of time in bed including meals in bed.

When I stand or try to walk I get severe pain in the lower back and pain shooting down the back of my thighs. Right now it's hard to walk the 20 feet from my bed to the bathroom.

Nerves are being pinched. At noon today they will do steroid injections into my spine and more will be done on 1/27. Hopefully this will relieve swelling. If it doesn't work then spinal surgery with fusing of vertebrae will be next.

I owe some people responses to emails but I've been falling behind lately. Hopefully I'll start feeling better in the coming weeks.

No need to clutter the net with responses to this. I know that there is a lot of sympathy out there among my friends. Hopefully I'll see many of you at the next GMCMI convention in Patterson, LA in March.

Emery,

don't want to clutter, but share a helpful information.

I did have a lower back operation when I was in my twenties. It was
quite successful. But after a couple of years, regular lower back pain
came back. I hated it. And found a solution.

Every night, I go to bed, I lay with a shallow back in, ie. on my side,
with my behind pushed back. Looking from above, my torso looks like C.
Just looked up the right word: I looks as if I have a hyperlordosis.
Since I've been doing this, my back pain went away.

Maybe it helps others.

I also have lower back pain, but I attribute that to a "front" problem (a too fat belly).

You may consider it clutter, but I do not.

Good Luck on your progress.

It definitely is no fun being laid up that way.

Treat Your Own Back (9th edition) by Robin McKenzie. This book was given to me by a physical therapist years ago. It has helped everyone I have loaned it to, or recommended it to, that took the time to read it and implement the exercises, stretches and posture changes. I bought an extra copy to loan out. I still do the stretches daily and refer back to the text if I have a minor episode. You will find that there are ways to prepare your back before lifting and ways to react if you feel an episode is about to occur.

<<<Help yourself to a pain-free back. This easy-to-follow book presents over 100 pages of education and clinically-proven exercises. The simple and effective self-help exercises in Robin McKenzie's Treat Your Own Back have helped thousands worldwide find relief from common low back and neck pain. This book helps you understand the causes and treatments, along with a system of exercises that can help you relieve pain and prevent recurrence>>>

If they suggest a fusing proceedure, first look into an injection process with some type of bio approved polymer that then keeps pressure off the nerve exit points. My ex mother in law had excellent results with this less invasive proceedure. I can try to find out more if the web doesn't lead you to it. On an even less invasive line is the home inversion table to use gravity to relieve pressure, which you may have already tryed. Must be difficult to not be able go and do your normal daily tasks let alone any fun projects.

My wife, weighing 115 pounds, was having major back problems. So it is not always a body weight issue. An inversion table took care of the issue for her in less that a week. She now uses it about 5 minutes a day and has had no re-occurrence. She loves that table.

Me too. I haven't needed my inversion table in a couple of years, but it
was a life-saver when I bought it from Sam's Club for $137, IIRC. I'd been
through physical therapy for over 6 weeks with no relief. Finally they
strapped me top & bottom and hung weights from my feet -- that gave me some
relief. I went that day and bought the table -- within a week I had no
more pain. When I occasionally have a little trouble, I'll get on it for a
few minutes each day until the problem's gone.

Ken's,

I haven't had any back problems since I retired to Australia, I attribute that fact that we're walking around up side down! ;-)

Back problems are a serious matter but I just couldn't resist! :>)

Actually I thought they sold those things in the US so Aussie's and Kiwis had something to acclimate themselves on when they visited here.

Emery - funny you should post this. I've been trying to decide if I wanted to update my never-ending back problems and treatments. I had my second injection today at Emory (not Emery) University spine clinic in Atlanta. Having a low tolerance for pain, I opt of the maximum IV pain killers prior to the procedure and have never had any pain involved.

Right now it is 9:30 EASTERN and I am pain free. So far, so good. I MIGHT opt for one more injection after the GMC Dixielanders Rally in Tampa and the following Sunshine Statesmen cruise, but nothing else before then. After the 3rd injection, if unsuccessful, I'll opt for my 2nd Microdiscectomy. Probably not spelled correctly, but what the hell? Almost 3 years ago I was so crippled up with pain that eventually I couldn't walk.

I wound up having to fly back to Atlanta from Panama City, Florida where I had driven to spend a week "manning up" for the surgery. When it came time to leave, I could neither drive nor could I make the ride with my long-suffering wife who had driven down to drive me to Atlanta. I was in a wheelchair both at the PCB airport as well as in Atlanta.

Surgery was, for me, the answer to prayers. At one minute I was lying on the table joking with my wife and to the surgeon who was a friend and neighbor when I lived in exile in Atlanta and the next the surgery was over and I was in recovery. I'm lucky to have lived in the Emory section of Atlanta, so when I got in trouble with my back one of my former neighbors was the guy I called and he got me in to surgery in 7 days. When I woke up I knew I was cured. I spent one night in the hospital in a bed with no one snoring next to me, I got to leave the TV on all night, which is my preference, and I had a morphine pump at my disposal. I was in Heaven! I was dreading the trip home more than I was dreading the surgery. My dear wife is not a good driver and I was afraid I'd tear out my stitches pushing the "brake" on the floorboard. 2.5 hours of agony! Smile

I've had almost 3 years of pain free living after trying massage, chiropractic, self-help books and pain clinics at our major hospital down here. I even tried acupuncture. I think I helped the acupuncturist's bottom line, but it didn't help me. I've had enough constipating pain pills to last me a lifetime. I tried the injections back then and they didn't help me.

I had minor surgery to help a major pain and it worked perfectly. I don't intend to spend the rest of my life on pills and injections if surgery can be as successful as it was the first time (no guarantee). This latest pain is a different disc and the sciatica is on a different leg. If I have to do it every 3 or 4 years, so be it.

Emery, ask about less invasive surgery than fusion. Ask about a Rhizotomy. (again not sure about the spelling) My 91 year old mother in law who only quit teaching dancing at age 88 has degenerative disc disease and the above procedure has changed her life. It involves a cauterizing of the nerves. Not very effective for my problem (sciatica with some stenosis) but it really helped her. (Degenerative disc disease)

btw -I used Ken's inversion table but always associated its use with nausea. Turned out to be the same thing that plagues me with terrible motion sickness. Some sort of inner ear trouble or vertigo, but terrible headache ensued, with controlled nausea. Didn't help my back and I almost threw up all over Ken's Garage-Mahal.

Sorry to rattle on, but I have had so many people ask through the sunshine groups that I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone.

Bottom line is, I don't want to give up my motorhome, but that is a real possibility without these continuing treatments for this chronic illness.
Call me anytime you want to talk. 22nine9two4sevensix56 or 22nine9three800six8
