Ya'll just delete those messages. No action required on your part.

It'll be alright. Ya know, it was just one of those casual actions that
winds up taking the rest of the day to straighten out.

I stay busy that way. :-(

I am sitting here thinking about what the world has come to. A little over 47 years ago I hired into IBM to work on computers. I spent over 30 years doing that in various roles. When I started people on the street had no idea what a computer even was. We (IBMers) talked in acronyms that confused everyone on the outside.

Today we have progressed to a point where a majority of people own and run their own small computers and the industry has was passed my capabilities. I retired over 15 years ago and things that are now simple to people like Billy now baffle me. The industry has moved on to the Billys of the world and I'm on the outside looking in.

Thanks Billy for all that you do for us.

Most people on the street do not even know what an 80 or 96 column punch card even was.

I've got an Uncle with 5 complete card drawers full of punch cards that when fed carefully and in order into the University of Vermont mainframe in the late 1970s produced a reasonably accurate drawing of the Mona Lisa. Apparently it was part of his grad school dissertation. When I was a kid my Uncle once threatened me with pain beyond measure if my horsing around caused one of the card drawers to fall out and the cards to get out of order.

I suppose it is all about the nostalgia for him since I doubt there is any place he could re-run that project outside of a comp-sci museum.

Bang !!

I certainly know what an 80 column card is... please don't bend or mutilate.

And I also worked with the more modern and smaller 96 column cards....

And... I printed many many copies of that digitized Mona Lisa image. Yes - from the collection of punched cards !!

It would print on a 132 column drum printer - on paper with holes on the margins for tractor feeding.

"Grey scale" was achieved with the size of the character being printed - a period (.) was lighter on the scale than an "X," or a "W," or an "M." The darkest on the scale was achieved with overprinting multiple characters in the same location... Yep - an X, W, and M printed in the same location makes a pretty dark blob. Especially with a new printer ribbon installed.

I might have had a pocket protector too.

Nice memories.

Hollerith cards were invented in the late 1800's and named after the inventor. Last time I saw one was in the 1980's when I mistyped one character on one card out of several hundred. The result caused my boss extreme anxiety and I was transferred to a dept where we could use the newfangled electronic keyboards. Nearly 100 years was a pretty good run for the punch card.

Having written way more software that I ever cared to I know too well the havoc that can result from a simple error. I'm not sure why Mr. BDub goes through all the effort but he deserves a big thanks.

Yep Ken - I hear ya. Sometimes I feel like a cyber neanderthal. Fortunately I have a 25 yo friend that is IT director for a suburban school system. He speaks proficient PC and Apple as well as all the server stuff. I figure my Ipad is dying of boredom based on how much I challnge it.

As a legacy item however the card cabinets make great storage cabinets for tools, supplies and parts. When I can find them they are usually cheap. The sellers generally have no idea what they were originally for.

You're so right Steve - those cabinets make for excellent tools and parts storage...

And dang... I've salvaged dozens of them. Dozens. Sure could use them now.

I've also salvaged a few fire safe vaults that were designed to hold 9 track NRZ tapes... Yea... on 10" diameter reels. Reel to Reel tape drives.

Man... those certainly were the days... no ??

Thanks Matt, Please do that.

While I came along at the phase out of Unit Record machines, I still had a few years of experience with them as companies migrated away from them. Most of the stuff I worked on was disk and tape oriented but the data still usually started out with holes in card, or in the case of the phone company and railroad, holes in a tape and got stored electronically.

I still have an 80 column card gage and a couple of slide rules around.

One of the first disk drives I worked on had a whopping 200 meg. capacity. The disk was about 18" in diameter by 8" high and had 10 platters. I also worked on some smaller 20 meg. drives.

I only spent a couple of years doing that before I migrated to communications "teleprocessing" devices.

My original point was that other than the few people in the industry, a computer was a mysterious thing that no one had ever seen or knew anything about.

Did Ken forget that there are a bunch of old-timers on here? Of course we
know the difference. I¹ll be we can even spell ENIAC either direction and
explain the acronym. Do you want to hear about the history of data
processing from that first one through GE¹s installation in Appliance Park
and how it was brought down for maintenance every six days just so all 16K
would work correctly when powered up?

Now, let¹s go further back. I always explained to my students about the
significance of ³moveable type² and what it meant. Poor Johann, so much
has changed. And, then there¹s the reason we have upper and lower caseŠ

At any rate, I figured that cryptic message was sent by the click of a
mouse just a millisecond before an expletive was uttered. Been there, done
that.

As for me, I¹m ready for the Cloud to go away. We¹re storing too much in
vulnerable places while putting security in jeopardy. Just because we can
doesn¹t mean we should ‹ or has artificial intelligence already taken over
the world?

Hollerith cards were developed for the new fangled loams for weaving cloth and carpets.

Still have an antique Pentium machine that has a very specialized ISA card in it. New card is in excess of $600. Old card works fine. Speed is not always everything.

Byron,

I am with you on this one. I don't want data stored someplace that is no place. I'm all for off-site back up, but it should be in a location that is known and the data owner controls.

Don't worry about data storage offsite. The people or the character
interpreters that scan your data (mining it for "certain words and
phrases") have your best interests at heart. If you really want your data
to be private, keep it locked up in your head. (Grin) My personal opinion,
yours might (and probably should) vary somewhat.

That's very cool!

I used to do a LOT of IEEE-488 programming in the late 80's and early 90's! I doubt I could recall any of it now...

The PET was probably my first introduction to the PC - but my dad was too cheap to buy one! I had to wait a few years until I delivered enough newspapers to buy my own Atari 400 (4K - I upgraded it to 36K myself, probably my first true EE adventure!)

I just DL'd a PDF of your book - I'll try to find time to read it!
