Chris posted this in another thread:
I hated the blast furnace Suburban in my coach and my TT. The damn things draw a battery draining 7 amps and wake you up at night, and the coach temp cycles too much. When on Shore Power, I ran the Heat pump, and still do, but my current rig is wired to fire up the furnace below like 40*. I was planning to hack a hydronic system with the water heater when I came across this:
http://www.alde.co.uk/images/3010-9013.jpg
It's similar to an aquahot but smaller for European RV's. The T@B trailers have them.
They are about $3K but I found one on ebay with a dent for under $200. It arrived, is basically brand new. I have it now and am gonna start playing with it. Looking forward to quiet heat.
They have a small recirc pump that draws 1.5-2A (I have the12V one) and can also be run on 110VAC. They also heat water, albeit only 2 gal, but plenty for a shower and fit in the same slot as my Attwood water heater.
Chis - that is one heck of a tind. I have been looking at this unit for the same reasons you have noted.
What are your plans for installing the "radiators". There appears to be enough room for them (where the flex duct was located) however most of those spaces don't have an easy path for adequate air flow. There are some places that can be opened up for air flow (behind the kitchen)but for adequate heat in colder times a forced air heater core may be needed. We do not want to put baseboard radiators in the hall but could put a panel under the dinette. Anyway I'm still giving this a lot of thought but have to get it done before GMCMI at Patterson.

Gene’s pages have a ton of info on Hydronic heating! It is a great way to go, but the only drawback is the $3K+ cost on installation and of course Steve's find on Ebay, but that won’t happen very often. Repair parts are extremely expensive also. Some of the Buskirk stretches were heated with hydronic systems when they were built in the late 90s and has been said the units are no longer available. Mine did not have it, as I have a suburban forced air heater which works great and quietly. The secret that I have found is moving the thermostat out of the rear bedroom area and moving it towards the middle of the coach, it gives better heat control as most of your air flow is in the front half of the coach.

Yep - I started with Gene's pages. Looked at all the pics I could find on the photo site.
This is the CFO's project (the coaches "owner", doesn't make any difference who's name is on the title.) so I doubt that $ will be an impediment. I'm just the designer, purchasing agent, and installer. I don't use the term "designer" casually. Engineering this project would require data which I am sorely lacking. Engineers calculate, designers guess. Right now the numbers I'm working with are more aligned to guess rather than fact.

Oh and the find was Chris's not mine. I should be so lucky. I would be interested in knowing the history of the unit he purchased. Why did it get the dent and why did it go so cheap?

Huh, I never thought to look in Gene's pages as I had not heard of anyone doing Hydronic in a GMC.
II got it from some company that seems to collect stuff with shipping damage. It is missing parts, which I need to collect. I tried on my trip to Europe this week, but the Czech Republic is not a very "campery" place.
There appears to be no damage, but I had to go to Prague for a week just after it arrived so have not played with it yet.I have no control for it but it can be run by jumpering the connector. I can probably hack my own controller for it anyway.
For the radiators, according to the manual, you cannot use copper in the system, due to the antifreeze type required, but I presume you could use normal green stuff and do it. I will be using normal copper slant fin baseboard heaters, but will sleeve them with aluminum tubing soldered at the ends. The only sucky part about that is I cannot go down to lowes and buy that stuff here in Phoenix. I can order with free shipping, though.
The coaches that use them in Europe have them in the floor corners, and false walls in front of them all the way up to the top of the couch backs, which allows for convection to draw the cold air up over the fins and out behind the back of the couch.
I will be doing this behind the couch, but put an exposed one at the foot of the bed. (Remember I am doing this in a Travel Trailer). If In a GMC, I would put a car oil cooler with a couple of 24V computer fans (they will run slower and be quieter) behind them and probably under the rear bed or under the bottom or the closet where the existing ductwork is. I will probably do this behind the toilet too, if I don't make a heated towel bar instead, as part of what prompted this is there is No heat in my trailers bathroom.

This stuff may work but it's only available in 5 gallons. http://www.oatey.com/doc/cryo-100al.pdf
I'm not sure sleeving a slantfin would work very well unless the void between the CU and AL was packed with heat transfer compound.

... or just use Hayden oil coolers. They are all aluminum, and only 3/4" thick so could mount on walls with a little panel in front of them. (I have straight walls and two window areas in the bedroom would be ideal).

Those old steam systems were not very reliable, and made a lot of noise, plus they were very high pressure, very hot, and dangerous. Hence the engineering of lower temp, low pressure hydronic pumped systems, which can also double as a chiller in the summer.
