G'day,
I was looking for a GPS that would allow downloading maps to my Samsung S-4 and Terry Taylor pointed me towards Sygic. I used it a
lot this past summer when traveling. The main bonus is that the maps are downloaded to you phone and therefore you don't need to be
connected to the internet your phone acts like a stand alone GPS.
They're currently having a sale and the maps for the USA are $27.99 which includes lifetime updates.

Nice app, thanks for the tip. The interface is a little less polished than a dedicated GPS but that's minor. Does the job without tapping the data plan. Right now, the exchange rate might give a bit of a discount. Also, they've tossed in a HUD.

I'm still most impressed with Nav Free on Android (now called navmii - I guess). I'd try it before spending money on Sygic (which I disliked). Apparently there is an iOS version, but I haven't used it enough to have an opinion. On iOS I still mostly use Garmin's Navigon (which I bought years ago). It has quirks - but I'm used to it.
On Android, I've been quite happy with the Nokia's "here" - but found that I could not make the turn-by-turn instructions loud enough! I did run it through Bluetooth at one point - but found that less than satisfying, for other reasons. So I found that I kept going back to Nav Free and thought it was good value and worked well.
I'd check it out - the price is right.

Miss Garmin, who resides in Salem, Oregon, is somehow related to the
infamous Murphy. Between the two of them, they take extreme advantage of
the unprepared GMC travelers. I personally have had her run me down
parallel chuckhole infested gravel frontage roads instead of the smooth
multi lane road within plain sight of the frontage roads, and many other
wrong ways as well. She and Murphy must have some interesting stories to
tell around the campfires after the weary travelers have gone to bed in
defeat. I much prefer my wonderful wife Judy and her Iphone. She speaks
distinctly, and pronounces the street names correctly, never tells me "you
are exceeding the speed limit" or other B.S. even when the coach is at a
standstill below decks in a ferry. Live SKILLED navigators, in my opinion,
are still preferable to even the best electronic ones. Besides, miss Garmin
has never offered me back rubs like Judy has. (grin)

According to my Geography Prof friends, the falldown on GPS systems is cheap mapping. I just sent them a query, is this outfit's maps more accurate and recent then whatever Garmin and Tom-Tom and Magellan and the others are using.

I don't see why you would need it for the IPhone. It already has it built in. With the Maps application you can navigate, etc.
if you want more detail you can download a free GPS app from the App Store specifically for the iPhone.

That's assuming a live, skilled navigator. GPS has saved my marriage. I
have a wonderful navigator that can barely read a map. :^)
Garmin sells a RV-centric GPS unit. Previous Garmin units have sent me
on roads that I shouldn't have been on. This one hasn't. The RV 760LMT.
It's hard to justify a stand-alone GPS anymore but for the GMC I find it
useful. And BIG. It also comes with an optional backup camera that is
tiny and very good. I might not have upgraded from my previous GPS but
I got a screaming deal on mine because I have a good friend that works
at Garmin. :^)

After considerable research, I recently moved to the Samsung Note 4 android phablet with a 5.7-inch screen (2,560 x 1,440 Super AMOLED screen, 515 ppi pixel density. A much higher number than a 1080p display). It's roughly the size of a checkbook. My intent was to find a suitable all-in-one device that could replace both the ipad and laptop while traveling.

After having it a couple of weeks, the original goal of a convenient all-in-one machine was met well enough that I thought it might replace/augment the GPS as well. We currently have Rand's RM7720 7" and a Garmin Nuvi 3.5", both mounted on dash beanbags.
In features, Sygic is closer to the RM7720 than the Nuvi. From what I've seen so far, it provides speed, speed warnings (seems to be preset at 6mph), current speed limit, and good -highly & easily customized- POIs. Though I have not tried it yet, there are instructions to import custom POIs, so perhaps the Blacklist and those for the DeLorme are do-able, too. Though the UI is clunky, one nice feature is the ability to load destinations from your contact file. I'm using gmail for contacts and the integration was seamless, I'm not sure how well it works for other contact files.
Sygic also does walking routes which neither the RM7720 nor the Nuvi offer. That might be handy.
CON: The ETA calculation is off here in the Mid-Atlantic states, probably everywhere in the US, usually by 20% or more. We had the same problem with a dedicated Tom-Tom. That's a nuisance.
I bought the World license. It allows installation on 5 devices. I installed one copy on my wife's phone as a backup GPS (she uses the Nuvi daily) or when she's traveling with someone who might not have a GPS onboard.
Now the next experiment is to see whether I can make this phablet display a backup cam. Micro ubs to Type A ubs adapter is on order.

the cops are and if there is a problem. Debris in the road or car
stopped on the side of the road. As you pass the area you have the
option to verify that it is still there or has cleared up. It tells you
the traffic speed of other users.

Thanks - Waze is interesting, but keep in mind it requires a data connection. That's a deal breaker for some.

Maybe not in this thread. But Here Maps does do that. And it works for
Android, iOS and Windows Phone 8.x
And yes, being able to work without being online is a necessity imho.
It was the reason for me to get a WP8 phone when I looked for a GMC last
year.

All the apps I've mentioned this time (and in the past) cache maps... I consider it a requirement. Data is great - but not always available.
Free:
Nav Free (now Navmii - I've only used the older Nav Free)
Here Maps (Nokia)
Maps With Me (limited routing)
Paid:
Navigon (has been owned by Garmin for a few years)
