Hello All... Mike from Madison, WI checking in again... lol.. tire advice
now please...

History: about 15 years ago I bought my 78 GMC in Arizona, and had tires
installed for drive home. Then near here when in shop, they had some used
Alcoa know off aluminum rims so I had them put on.

I have: Steeltex Radial R4S LT225/75R16 115/112R load range E M/S

I can't seem to see the DOT on them. humm. They have plenty of tread.
some slight side wall cracking. Sorry to say removed tire sun covers today,
first time all year, sadly, and both of the front rear wheels had lost all
air pressure and were very flat, and they sidewall was bent out. I did have
some 4-5 2x4's to block under the frame.

I need to run to Milwaukee, to visit fellow GMC'er, and in November take
daughter and her friend to Orlando for a week for thanksgiving.

So... I got the info below from the gmc site. I have a Sam's membership. I
can order from tirerack, and there is a good priced shop out in country
near me, my 2nd cousins even. Maybe I can get a friend with Costco
membership if that is best.

I guess I, being single guy, 48, in search of female partner, do not drive
the GMC as much as someday hopefully. I do not drive/use the GMC much
these years, so desire tires to last as long as possible, and I will take
care not to let the air out like it accidentally happened this year. GMC is
stored all winter here of course. So, is there a consensus what might be
best for me to get? and do I have to get some now? Neighbor man, has
Fleetwood RV, he has RV rated tires on his!!!???

thank you so much, appreciated. Mike

WHAT SOME PEOPLE ARE USING

*BFGOODRICH*
My personal tire recommendation:
BFGoodrich (Michelin) makes a newer design LT225/75R16 Commercial T/A All
Season D and E polyester side wall tire with a "Cool Wedged shoulder
insert". That reduced the tread's edge rounding on the rear tires during
sharp turns. My tires now have 12,000 miles on them with nearly the same
sharp edge as when new. My light coach runs 50 psi on those rears. I chose
the M/S with dual compound tread for better all season traction in the wet
and comfortable ride. UTQG rating, tread wear=440, Traction=A. UTQG Tire
ratings are reflected in the tire pricing. There is only a $3/tire
difference between D & E rating with the E having increased tread and
puncture resistance so I chose E's but run them at less than D rating
pressures. Both rated tires consist of two steel belts and two ply
polyester carcass. (New construction methods to equal the old 12 ply
rating)
Others have ordered these tires from COSTCO for $113/tire. Installation and
balancing more.Chuck Botts

*GOODYEAR*

John at Hill Top Tire; Rio Rancho NM will purchase the Alcoa (classic)
rims, mount the Goodyear G159 tire, balance and ship (in USA-main land) for
$382.50 each. NOTE: thats with the Mcgard Flanged Dualie Lugs. I believe
the other lugs are more $. .
505-892-2664

6 EA G-159-215/85/16---E load range--$140 plus $7 balancing, each
Discount Tire Co.

*MICHELIN*
Costco handles Michelin, and has >225/75 R16 10 ply E rated tires for
$111.99.

When you wear them out, try the new Michelin LTX M+S 225/75 R16 LRE
Polyester side wall, Steel tread. You will find they are easier to
ballance

*BRIDGESTONE*
Just got 6 Bridgestones at NTB for $110 each including mounting and
balance. They seem to another tire of choice and Patrick got the deal
first at NTB in Atlanta. I showed them a copy of his invoice and they did
the same for me after a little bitching about different areas of the
country and that they should be charging more because we are in a high col
area. If you want a copy of my invoice let me know. It also included the
Alcoa wheels and lug nuts. Marcus

*GENERAL*
My total $$ for 7 Generals at Sam's was $555 including mounting &
balancing (

You are going to get recommendations all over the place. It is the "I bought this so it has to be the best syndrome".

Then you will get the "tires are only good for 5 years" crowd even though Michelin and others say they are good for 10 years.

So here goes my biases.

With your kind of driving, you are not going to wear out the new tires. You are going to run them until they rot (age) out.

So I recommend you look at what seems to be the most popular here in order of price.

Michelin - Expensive was available for Sam's
BF Goodrich Commercial TA - less expensive - available at Costco and Sam's club

I also like my Kumho KL78's. - relatively cheap - good traction off road on wet grass and dirt available from Tire Rack. .

I suggest that you use Load range E tires.
LRD's will work in most cases, but LRE's are only about $5.00 more.

Finally you need to run them at air pressures according to the weight on each axle. If you do not know the weights of your axles then I suggest (if you have a 26" foot coach) that you start at 65 PSI front and 60 PSI on the middle and rears. Check the temperatures on each tire with your hand at each fuel stop. If they are not getting hot, then your air pressure is enough or more than is required.

Good luck, Be prepared for 5 more suggestions.

I have been using the BF Goodrich Commercial T /A for many years. Your pricing is way old. Costco recently was about $225 per tire. I bought them last month at Discount Tire for $202 each.

They will age out, like people say. I bought Coopers, mostly because I've been dealing with the same guy for 30 odd years. Actually, he's second generation but the same store/family. He went to the warehouse and picked me out six that were only a few weeks old according to the DOT code so I can get max life. Mounted on my new Eagles, balanced and checked for round, new stems, including tax n tip just at a thousand bux. Robin got the old steel wheels and dated Firestones for the coach he had to move.

Blaines Farm & Fleet currently has Cooper Discoverers on sale and you
get a $70 gift card on a set of 4. I ran Coopers from them for 8
years and they were great in my opinion. Now I'm replacing them due
to age, they still have good thread.

Make sure you get the latest date codes possible, I make them show me
the tires before I commit to buying them.

By the way, I live in Wauwatosa, 2 block off of Hwy 45 by Mayfair
Mall....give me a call and stop in !!!

Give Weber Tire a call. I've had good deals from them in the past. No idea how they do it, but their prices are usually great.

As said above, the tires on most RV's will rot off before they wear out.

Good Luck!

I purchased a set (7) of BF Goodrich Commercial T/A All Season LRE's thru
Amazon in August for $166 delivered free to my address; paid Les Schwab $8
per tire to mount the tires and paid $9 per tire for balancing beads. All
tires were made in weeks 13 or 16 of this year. I have run the BF Goodrich
tires since 1999 on three different GMC's (still have all three). I run my
tires for a minimum of 10 years. JWID.

and Michelin LTX M/S 2

LT225 /75 R16 115R E1 BSW

seems similiar prices... Wonder which will last me longest? surely both
are great tires. etc...

Mike,
Yes, doing fine. I sold the GMC in June this year. Sherry's mom found that she could not use it as much as we thought. Didn't want it to sit and waste away after all the work we put into it. Wanted someone to enjoy it. Even though I no longer have it, I still read the forum mostly everyday. I'm addicted to it. Is Stephanie still competing ? If so good luck and hope she wins all the titles.

Firestone: $151.95

I just talked to my contact at the local Big O Tires where I do a lot of
business. I asked about the BF Goodrich Commercial T/A tires. He asked if I
wanted the original ones or the new ones called AS II (All Season II).
Anyone ever use these?

The quote that he gave me for six AS II's was $1318 ($220/ea), mounted,
balanced and tax included.

I have been using the BF Goodrich Commercial T /A for many years. Your
pricing is way old. Costco recently was about $225 per tire. I bought them
last month at Discount Tire for $202 each.

You are going to get recommendation all over the place. Itis the "I bought this so it has to be the best syndrome".

Then you will get the "tires ore on good for 5 years" crowd event though Micheline and other say they are good for 10 years.

So here goes my biases.

With you kind of driving, you are not going to wear out the new tires, you are going to run them until they rot (age) out.

So I recommend you look at what seem to be the most popular here in order of price.

If you do not know the weights of your axles
then I suggest if
you have a 26" foot coach that you start at 65 PSI front and 60 PSI on the middle and rears. Check the temperatures on each tire
with your hand at
each fuel stop. If they are not getting hot, then your air pressure is enough or more than is required.

Good luck, Be prepared for 5 more suggestions.
