Finally with all the help from the community and from Dick Paterson I determined the cause of my carb acting up and my hard starts when cold. I replaced the cap and rotor due to uneven wear inside the cap and that solved the hard starts and following some advice from a GMC publication about fuel pump pressure increasing due to a plugged cannister or vapor line I simply pulled the line off the carb and plugged the port. The GMC started right up and idled fine. The carb quit leaking gas out the top gasket and pump area and the flooding conditions that were causing the popping noise as the unspent fuel burned in the intake manifold disappeared. Overall, this was an eureka moment for me!! I intend to change the oil since some gas probably made its way into the crankcase. This debacle was solved from many trial and errors generated from you helpful folks and I am grateful. Terry in WV, Dick, and others!!

That's great as a diagnostic tool. Now you need to fix it correctly. I would not levave it that way.

Where did you read something about fuel pump pressure and the fuel vapor line to the carb? And where was it connected on the carb?

The article was in a GMC Motor Home publication supplied by Cinnabar back in the day. The port on the carb is located on the driver's side with a 1/4" inlet. It travels from there all the way to the cannister. I have yet to look into the cannister to investigate the filter or throw on a new fuel line grade hose to see if it was also a vacuum problem. It was a small article from a question from a reader. I suppose I could try to find the link all I did was type in vapor line and cannister/causing flooding like conditions with a carb and the link was supplied.

September 1995, number 5 is the publication GMC Motorhome News, Pete Pieperson. Page 10, my symptoms were small, slight flooding but once I removed the line and plugged the port my carb quit flooding and the popping noise I was hearing in the carb was unspent fuel burning from the heat of the engine on the manifold. I have yet to look into the cannister or replace the fuel hose for proper vacuum and vapor.
