For the past two years, we had a strong gas smell in the cockpit, especially after I had FILLED the tanks, it would last for days. Tried most everything. Today, I decided to verify the liquid/vapor separator was working so I took it off. Yep, ball rattles and it goes only one way when the ball is up.

So I decided to bypass the charcoal canister for a test but when putting the hoses back on I noticed that the big hose from the Tee that goes to the tanks was on top and the smaller line that goes to the charcoal canister was on the bottom. Exactly backward. Upon inspection, I could see where the smaller hose was forced over the male port. Took some effort and gross stupidity to do that. You'd THINK the dumbass would have wondered why it was so hard to get on.

(*#%$&((&%$&&**!

So what has been happening is that when I filled the tanks, as they burped and gurgled, raw gas went up into the top of the separator and instead of floating the ball, it just drained through and went directly into the charcoal canister which stunk for days. Even if enough raw gas came in to float the ball and stop the flow, all that gas would ultimately drain into the charcoal canister.

Putting things together correctly and will report.

I'm concerned that the charcoal canister has been made useless by all the raw gas.

Well, maybe not. Drove to Mt Ga and spent the night at the Roosevelt state park. (Nice place but way down the side of Pine Mt in a hole by a nice lake... signage sucks) Had gas smell pretty much all day and lingered a couple hours after we stopped.

I'm kind of stumped. Most noticeable after a gas stop which points to the venting/cannister thing. Don't see any leaks or drips. The canister was probably filled with raw gas frequently for the past Lord knows how many years. The liquid separator was that way when I got the coach 2 years back.

Could it be the charcoal outgassing?

Ideas welcome. Gotta get this fixed and not just for the copilot. The nuclear option comes to mind. That is, running a couple vents through the roof and forgetting about it.

If they will stand up and be counted
Many " old-timers" have eliminated the canister-etal, an just run the vant
hose to a filter as high as possible in the wheel well....

Kerry,

If you look to the left of the driver seat you will see a rectangular protrusion in the plastic side panel. Behind that protrusion
is the filler neck with a rubber hose connected to it. I had the same gas smell in Double Trouble before JimB cut that rectangular
protrusion out of the side panel and we were able to replace the rubber hose that connects the vent line to the tanks. He cut it out
because it was a hell of a lot easier than disassembling everything you had to remove to get the whole side panel out. Obviously
with your metal shaping skills you could fabricate a new rectangular section with flanges on it that could be screwed to the
existing panel.

May even be the cause of what is called - vapor lock -
Hard to build pressure or vacuum in a tank with 3/4 inch vent holes open in
the top !!!

I had a gas smell in the coach which was worse every time I filled
with fuel. Turned out one of the seals on one gas tank where the
float is was bad. Had to drain the gas, drop both tanks to fix the
problem. At the same time I repaired that I replaced all of my hoses.
