The water in my coach has a bad odor and I'm wondering how one goes about sanitizing the system. I only use it for flushing and washing, but the odor makes me wonder how safe it really is, for any purpose.

There are instructions in your operating manual for the coach on how to sanitize your fresh water system. 1/4 cup household bleach to one gallon of water. One of these gallon mixtures to each 15 gallons of tank capacity. Then top off with fresh water (fill the tank). Run this water through your entire system until the solution is in everything. Let stand for 3 hours or longer. Then flush the system with fresh water. You may have a chlorine smell for a while when you run the water. Run more water through the system. Eventually the chlorine smell goes away. If you still have the bad smell then you may have another problem. Dead mouse, etc...

Next time or two that you fill the fresh water tank, add a pint of hydrogen peroxide and see if that works.

It may take several times for your water AND lines to be completely disinfected.

Be careful with hydrogen peroxide.
Get the 5% or weaker.
The 30% will remove your skin.

Thanks for the replies. My coach is in the shop with some fuel low problems, and all my manuals are in it. Just sitting around thinking about all the things I need to do to it. Smile

Off the top of my head, I can't think where there is an opening in the tank to pour in the solution . . .

Dave,

How do you fill your water tank now? Get a long funnel and pour the solution in thru
the same inlet.

First super sanitize it by putting in a cup of household laundry bleach. Then fill your water tank and turn on your pump and run some through the faucets until you smell bleach. Also flush your toilet and run some through the shower into the toilet.

Let it sit for 2 hours orore and then drain the water tank and refill with water and run some through the faucets again.

Drain the tank sand refill and flush through the faucets.

Everything should smell dress now.

I just wanted to say we had this same problem and did exactly what Emery suggested, and seems fine now. i.e. passes SWMBO's nose test!

Hydrogen Peroxide is a safer option. Bad odor in the fresh water system is caused by anaerobic bacteria taking up residence in your hot water tank. I had, in a previous house this exact problem. Every six months, drain the hot water tank, add hydrogen peroxide solution let it sit for several hours, then drain and flush with fresh water. would be easier if your hot water tank was easy to add solution to, instead of filling the entire system.
Once you get ahead of the bacteria, you can relax the cleaning cycle.

Not necessarily a safer option. It really depends on the concentration and you do not discuss that.

Here are the Material Data Sheets.
