Well, I got toad problems. No fire. Which would be out of place here, except it's fitted with a Summit Racing distributor which is a clone of the GMC HEI setup, down to the parts. 12 volts on the BAT contact. Ground is ground at the battery. Module swap made no difference. Advance didn't have a coil tester, but did have a new GMC coil and a meter, mine and the new one measure the same - low resistance on the primary, 7-9Kohms across the secondary. Pickup coil shows continuity. Wires in the plug to the coil from the module show continuity. Ideas? I'll see if AutoZone or O'Riellys have a coil tester, both are close by. All have module testers, I'll test it even though a new GM replacement made no difference.

\-johnny What else turns off the ignition? There is magic to turn off the fuel pump when the ignition is on and the oil pressure goes to zero. Maybe there is magic to turn off the ignition that is confused.
My sister's old Honda had a switch that prevented the starter solenoid from doing what it was supposed to unless the clutch was applied. That switch decided that the clutch was not pushed in even when it was. She bypassed the switch.
That's the kind of stuff you might be looking for.

Does your battery have a decent charge ?I have seen HEI that didn't fire when the battery was low. I assume this is a 4 wire module with a vacuum advance distributor. The pick up coil isn't shorted to ground is it? The vacuum plate could cause it to open or short when it moves if it has a problem. Your new coil and module are probibly ok but if you never know unless they were checked. Did you check for a spark at a plug? Is the rotor and the carbon button in the cap ok ? When you swapped the coil did you put the ground strap back in it? If you have a tachometer you should unplug it from the distributor. You did check the connections at the module for shorts? Did you check to be sure the distributor has 12 volts when the motor is cranking?

I've seen HEI distributers carbon track in the cap and loose the high voltage there.
Look carefully, it can be hard to see.

Thanks for the suggestions!. A meter on the 12V lead shows 12V with switch on. As the starter begins it drops, then recovers. The thing has a miniscule battery fitted, the one from my expired VW is now charging, I'll try it. It is 4 wire module with vacuum advance. Wiring has been hacked for the engine swap, PO wasn't an electric type at all. I'll check the pickup coil for ground, all I looked at was continuity. Three wires to the coil ass'y, hot, ground, and coil low side which )presumably) the module switches. Cap looks OK under the coil contact. Keep watching this space...

I recently had a problem where I had a bad connection from the plug to the coil. The coil connector had pushed up into the cap just far enough to not be connected even though the plug seemed to be all the way in. Take the cap off the coil and check the actual connections at the coil.

I forgot to mention there are 2 different coils available when you get a replacement coil you need to get the proper one to match your pick up coil.they are phased different the way to tell which is which is by the color of the wires. One of them has a red and white wire the other has a yellow and ? Maybe white. The pickup coil is coded similar. I think it will still spark if mismatched but I never tried it .
