I am getting tired of dragging the BBQ/Grill out from under the bed and then setting it out either on the table or more likely a couple of feet from the side of the GMC. I hook direct to the main propane tank to run it.
So I noticed someone on the picture site had been working on a bumper mount grill that looked a little floppy to me.
I have seen the ones mounted into the hitch but I usually have a trailer hooked in there. so the next spot to hang it from is the tire carrier.

The plan is to have a folding, telescoping arm that will center (or nearly center) the Grill while in motion. The Grill weighs about 30 lbs but in transport mode will be only a few inches from the tire. while in use I expect to be able to extend the arm about 58 inches or so. this will put the closest corner of the grill about 18 inches from the coach.

The guy at the Metal supply place only had a kind of thick walled 2 inch square tube. I think the tube weighs in at around 30 lbs too. should I be able to hang the extra weight on the tire rack? I assume they over built the rack. and that it is attached to the frame. (I could just go look but it is kind of raining)

interesting question. I plan on doing two things eventually... through bumper hitch, with a 2 inch reciever just above bumper for bike rack or cargo carrier. going to cut and remount the tire plate up 2" to make that work. (not currently enough space between spare and current bumper)

I also plan on welding on a 2" tube on the center of the tire carrier to have another spot for bike rack or cargo rack....

I was not so concerned about how much weight I put on it, just was going with the trial and error method. the weber Q is one thing I want outside as well, and maybe a generator. I figure if I put something on it, and it flexes too much, maybe I need to rethink.

will want to know what peoples thoughts are.

now i just need time to do the job!

Adam,

I have a good data point for you...
For a number of strange reasons I have frequently loaded two spares at 78# each on the existing spare tire mount. I would have to guess that this was over a total of about 1200 miles over several years.

I don't think your grill will be an issue.

If you switched from a stock steel spare to and alloy one, you've removed about 15 lbs from the mount.

I wish I had a tru the bumper hitch. I have dragged the one I have several times and have to remember to hit the air before coming into some driveways.

Thanks Matt - that is the answer I was looking for. I can't see the whole works getting over 80lbs but I will weigh it before I finish. would have made out of aluminum if I could weld that stuff.

The alloy rims won't be for another 6 or seven years when the tires on her now age out. Just bought NEW last summer.

I will take and post pics on the photo site when I start the project. sometime on the weekend if all goes well.

I traveled 7000 miles last year with 2 spare tires on the OEM rack in the back.

Adam,

I have a BBQ grill I purchased from Camping World awhile back, it takes a short strip that needs to be mounted to the body.

I located it just above the LPG door and is basically inconspicuous.

The nice thing about locating the grill there is you can BBQ when it's raining and NOT get wet.

I'll try to remember to take some photos over the next day or so.

I was supposed to have the money to do things like that, but the abrogation of the bankruptcy laws saw to that in good order.

Rob - A friend of mine has one of those on his pop-up, they do work well. however I do not have an awning(nor want one) and need to get the grill out a bit to get under the sun shelter.
In my mind the arm will allow at least 56 inches. however with the thickness of the wall I maybe able to get closer to 72 inches from the center of the spare.
will see how it goes. got to move 320 cases of Girl Guide cookies first.
