Howdy,

I'm a new member here. I've bit the GMC bug pretty bad, and I'm in the market for one. I'm looking at Craigslist, and I've reached out to the GMC Great Lakers, but I also wanted to post an 'ad' here.

I'm looking for a motorhome that is coming due for some TLC, but is currently roadworthy and serviceable. I'm thinking in the $10K-$15K range. We are a growing family of four, so the floor plans that lean towards lounging space over sleeping space are out. The style (Palm Beach, Extravaganza, etc) isn't so important, as I plan on redoing the interior to match the way we travel and camp. I'd prefer not to travel too far from southwest Ohio, maybe a little ways into Kentucky or Indiana.

I'm also happy to hear from folks in general. Happy to have found this addiction, but oh, my poor wife...

Thanks,
Brian Cooper

Sir: I have a 1974 in Knoxville, Tenn. It has a rebuilt 455 motor and transmission and drives out nice. New brakes, 16.5 Aluminum wheels and decent Goodyear 159 tires. It does need paint, some interior and plumbing work. Double bed in the rear with bunk beds in the front. $8000

I have a '73 23' that is in the process of being made to sleep 4. General consensus here is that a 23' is too small for a family of four, so maybe not for you. The front dinette has been replaced with a jackknife sofa. The rear is going to be the dinette/double bed (which I have but has yet to be installed, replacing the rear permanent bed). I have about $8,000 in it, and if you consider finishing the Onan re-installation and the rear dinette and a bolster for the jackknife to be "TLC", this one might almost qualify. I don't want to imply that it has enough room for a family of four, but here it is. Other selling points: 16" steel wheels with Michelins that have been recalled and Odyssey cockpit seats.

If you dont mind going North, there are usually 3 or more for sale in Michigan during the summer months on Craigslist.

I think there are 5 listed right now in different parts of the state. All but one I think in your price range.

I dont have any affiliations to any of them, but I know the silver/grey one for 8500 in Grand Rapids has been listed on and off since last year. When I was on the hunt, that was the only one under 10K. Im not sure what the deal is with it, but I do recall seeing it listed a while ago.

Best of luck.

Brian,

Two things..
1 - Don't put a clear phone number here. This forum is open to unvetted members and some seem to be spambots, so don't post either phone nrs. or @ddess.

2 - The interiors of these coaches were carefully designed by a group of serious engineers. they usually work very well as designed. So, do not rip out the interior until you have tried to make it work. That is why I suggest that you get it to be reliable and fun and use it - First. There are always coaches on the market that have had the interior stipped and then the owner "ran out of gas". These are usually available very inexpensively.

Other that, Keep working Craig's list and the local chapter's websites. There are a lot of good coaches out there that are just waiting for an owner with energy.

Energy does certainly help, bought my 12 year sat 77 Eleganza II on May 12th 2014. My family's first trip in her after mechanical refurbishment was on August 02nd 2014, 140 mile round trip. Took about $3800 to make her reliable and useable. We have about 2100 miles on the coach since that trip, all trouble free.

If you have a specific goal just go for it, credit cards can always be paid off later......

Brian,

Since Kentucky isn't such a tall state and given the fact that Knoxville is
just down the road on I-75, I'd recommend you seriously consider what Chuck
has offered. There are a few of us here that know you can trust him. I say
that because not everyone knows everyone else. Chuck's reputation and
integrity aren't to be questioned.

By the way, Chuck didn't send me 25 cents to say this either. He sent a dime
over the internet in 1s and 0s. Hah!

Thanks for all the posts folks, got some healthy leads, and some thoughtful words. To help you get to know us a little better, I'm 31, married, with a two year old girl and a five month old boy. Probably one or two more before we're done. I was an avid camper before we got married, and I'm hoping a motorhome provides enough civilization for her to enjoy traveling. She does enjoy seeing new things, but her bedroom needs to be man-made, along with her bathroom. Weeklong trips at most.

I had certain ideas about how we'd use the motorhome, but I think we'll get one that suits ok immediately, and give it some time to see what we like and what we don't. And proceed accordingly. What I'm looking for is something that travels well with 2 adults plus 2 to 4 kids, and serve more like a bunkhouse at destination. I think asking a GMC to be sleeping, cooking, and play space for our family is a bit much, so we'd make other plans for eating and entertaining, and would use showerhouses when the opportunity presents itself. That had me thinking we could do without the galley, toilet, shower, etc, and just give us a little room to be out of each others way. Less stuff to maintain, less weight, maybe save enough weight to tow a light boat well.

Thanks all,
Brian

You are looking for a model with floorplan 26-10 as depicted here:

http://www.gmcmotorhome.com/faq/GMC26Interior.html

That's the only OEM plan that will sleep 6 if you end up with 4 kids that all need beds of their own.

I read here every now and then somebody is looking for davo/bunks and others have removed them and are looking to give them away. That tells me that not many that originally had two sets of bunks will still have them.

Brian,

A 26'-10 would be a good one to start off with. Don't give up with a
minimal kitchen and a bath room with toilet. They are a must with a
wife and family on the road. A family of 4 here in Florida found a nice 23' to
be just too small for them to use. My advise is find a good dependable
26' that you can start to grow to use. Chuck Boyd is a great person
to have as a mentor. Believe me it can work.

My 1978 Royale will sleep 2 adults on the front Dinette, and 2 up and 2
down in the rear. Should work for you.

Yea, the one Chuck listed looks like a 26-10. Sometimes the stars align...just need to figure out where the wife stashed the checkbook...

It is more of a 26-11 with the davo and pivoting seats transposed. No reason you can't take the pivoting seats out and replace them with a davo/bunk sometime in the future to turn it into a 26-10 if you want/need to...

And there is no dinette, the rear is the permanent double bed.

Sir: I really don`t know? I don`t think I have ever asked any GMCer what club they belonged to. I have done some stuff for some folks from your area. Recently, helped Richard with a steering column and balanced the weight of his coach. Helped put an engine in for Dean & Cheri. Don`t remember names so good either. I am sure I have met a few Great Lakers but probably did not know it.

Brian,

I am going to offer some suggestions based on my and others experience.

We have been on the road for two weeks today on our way to Chippewa Falls. There have been two whole days of rain. If we had not been able to operate as a completely self contained unit, it would have been miserable. You have to store and refer to that data point as it is a certainty. So, keep the galley. Want to add a microwave without tearing it up, I show you.

Our son and daughter are about three years apart in age and a light year in thinking. We have always had to provide separation. Little girls also seem to need privacy from time to time. So, keep the head (bathroom). As a wet bath (the shower is the same place as the pot), they use no more floor plan than a pot alone. Is also a great thing to have if you are going to make any roads trip of any duration. It can save a lot of stopping.

Your plan to use the park's euphemism and shower is nice, but that puts a real crimp in the places you can actually go and be comfortable.

A man I once worked with a man with six kids.... (I told him at five that they could stop that.) They could take over a McD' when the doors of the 10 passenger van that they traveled in were opened. While I knew him, he had a more or less regular "sleeps 4" MH and towed first a pop-up and later a bunkhouse trailer. What an operation that was, but the kids used to argue over who got to sleep in the trailer.

He used to carry an aluminum boat on the pop-up, but I never saw it on the bunkhouse.

Matt,

Data point stored (in rectangular file, not the circular one). Thanks. Also thanks for thinking about the phone number thing.
