Chuck,

If your iPad has a built in GPS "sensor" (I don't know what they're called) check out Sygic. You can download the maps to the iPad
so it works like a "real" GPS and doesn't need the Internet.

I have it on my Samsung S-4 and John has it on his Samsung Note.

I like "WAZE" it uses internet, and therefore some of your data plan, but it it interactively updated by drivers, continuously warning you of traffic, road hazards like debris, or road kill, and speed traps. It has a built in speedometer and the map zooms out based on speed. The roads are also continuously adaptive based on collected user data, the day a "WAZE" driver drives on a new road, the road is part of the database... But I guess if you don't have a cellular ipad, and a signal, it won't work. Google bought WAZE last year and uses the data to populate the google maps traffic data.

I have no exact recommendation, but two notes:

a) You must have an iPad with 3G, as only those have the GPS sensor onboard.

b) Get a software that works without the internet. Travelling will bring
you in places without access. Great if the software gets additional
information off the net, but the pure routing and stuff, should work
without.

Peer,

Good points!

I bought Helen an iPad Air and inherited her iPad 1. I wanted to use it as a BIG GPS in Double Trouble and was going to install
Sygic until I discovered that Sygic would not run with OS5.

That's what is referred to as an "aw s#!t."

I have not found any other GPS programs that download the maps to the device do you (or anybody else) know of any.

Based on experience Helen has had with the iPad connecting to the Internet through AT&T I DO NOT WANT an Internet based GPS.

Rob M.

I use Navigon on iOS - I think it was a better app before Garmin got involved with it. I've been using it for many years - mainly because it doesn't require data. It may not be straightforward to acquire/install the older version iOS 5 would require.

I also use Sygic on several Android devices - but I still prefer Navigon.

But neither of them are perfect...

I use Navigon works great but you need to have a cellular model or it won't work. You do not need a data plan but you have to have a sim chip installed does not matter who's

I thought I'd also mention that if you DON'T have a cellular iPad - you CAN use an external GPS unit that connects by Bluetooth.

They are apparently VERY accurate and are about the same cost as the cellular option on an iPad.

Two that I'd heard of:
