Again this fall I can't seem to trap them fast enough, this has got to be a
common problem. Any advice about cleaning them out of the dash heater would
be appreciated. What are the main entry points for field mice? Help!

Michael,

I've never had mice problems, but I have worked on '76 HVAC a lot. The
only external entry point is the fresh air inlet at the top, passenger side
of the under-hood HVAC box. You really should do the recirculation mod
described here:
http://gmcws.org/Tech/air_conditioning/air_conditing.html
and here:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g4637-type-ii-dash-air-condition-modification.html

If you don't want to do that, at least put hardware cloth over that opening.

As a part of that mod, you'll remove the front cover of the HVAC box,
giving you access to most of the critter hiding places. But you still
won't see the area between the HVAC evaporator and the firewall. For SOME
acess to that, remove the resistor pack (with the wires going to it) on the
driver's side of the HVAC box, near the firewall. You'll probably be able
to vacuum some debris from there. For full access to that space, you'll
have to remove the evaporator, NOT a recommended procedure unless you want
to completely rework the HVAC.

There are a lot of openings into the HVAC from the interior -- best to not
let the critters get that far.

HTH,

Ken H.

Get them before they get in..

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/miscellaneous-pictures/p22783-mouse-quot-feeders-qu.html

I spot these all around the barn where the GMC sleeps.. I also put out these same bait blocks arouind the inside of the barn.

For inside the GMC I use glue traps. The primary points of entry in my coach was through the holes in the floor for the plumbing. I plugged alll those with SS choreboy scrub pads. Only problem with this is the toilet has to be pulled and the floor flange removed to get at this one. The bath drain can ge a bear to get at in most floor plans. The kitchen one is easy.

The damn mice can get in through any small hole. I doubt there is any way to really stop them from getting in. I try to get em before they get to the GMC.

Only place I've had problems is where the air lines exit the coach.  I think I've got it sealed good this time.  I also use bait blocks, they eat some of the block and then get thirsty and leave the coach
In search for water....some where outside they then croak.

We don't have cats because of Chloe. However the neighbors cats visit often. I think the bait blocks make for slow mice.

That's one concern, will the mice eat
the poison, wander into a cat cage and poison a cat?

You have to buy poison that is not "Secondary Kill". That means it won't poison the critter that eats the poisoned critter.

Living next to large fields we get rodent problems from time to time, peanut butter and black cat snap traps are great for in the basement, but the best for outside is the bait bags from the local co-op, throw the bag in a rat hole, they drag it in and they all die.

That's what we do and it works.

I took a quick look at the LD50 numbers and took a guesstimate that it would not be possible for a cat to catch that many mice. Also keeping the bait feeders up reduces the number of mice available to the cats. Probably a better guide is that the same cats have been visiting for several years.

Live in the country. If there is a negative it is the rodents seeking a dry place to stay. Last fall, I bought a product called Fresh Cab Rodent Repellent. No problem since. This product was initially meant to protect the electronics in farm equipment and can be found at most farm supply outlets.

Yes we are in the country and fields all around. Lots of moisture this
year, we were in flood central just one year ago, so lots of mice and all
looking for the perfect place to overwinter. I'm putting in some ultrasound
units I bought at Home depo today

Moved into the new home in the woods 2 years ago. I've killed 110 (onehundred and ten) in the shop and woodshed. 1 in the GMC (GMC is inside the shop, 55x36) and 5-6 in the house, attic and attached garage. I use traps and peanut butter. But in the summertime the bugs eat the PB so its tougher. But i think they live outside in the summer.

We have lived in the country or a rural area for a long time.

The thing I have found is that you have to be diligent in the fall. When it gets cold, they go looking for someplace that is warm. (Sounds like some people I know.) Even though we keep baited traps in critical locations all year, come the first frost, I check and re-bait all of them. The best bait I have found is raw peanuts.

Forget about sealing them out. I have seen mice run at full gallop through a hole I could not get my pinky into. Out in the barn, I just be sure to have a day a week with the dog out there. I still find nests in my tool box and parts bins.

Guys,

I use what they call a “Yooper Mouse Trap”. Got it from a guy in the UP of Michigan. As we live below the bridge we are trolls. I gave this to Jim K about 18 months ago because he was having a bad vermin issue in his new place of business. I use them in my out buildings here on the mini farm and I get 30 to 40 dead mice a season in each trap. Easy to build and they really work! The magic word is Peanut Butter!

This is the last mouse trap you'll ever need. Catches packrats and chipmunks too. No poison. Use RV anti-freeze for winter ops.

How many mice does it take to make a nice mouse stew?

Seems like it would take longer for them to drown in the pink RV antifreeze than it would for the green stuff to kill them. Which one is more humane? Does anybody care?

This is the last mouse trap you'll ever need. Catches packrats and chipmunks too. No poison. Use RV anti-freeze for winter ops.

A dog or cat would think the green stuff to be quite tastey though not healthy. In the winter mice die of hypothermia before they drown. This is a very effective trap. We used them a lot at work, unofficially of course.
