I don't think this person knows how to figure gas mileage.

Maybe it was a typo and he really meant to say 12 mpg. I have a 78 Toronado XS and the only way it might ever see 22 mpg is going downhill.

Nah - not a typo. A missing decimal point, 2.2mpg.

In the early 50's, with 200 cu.in. less displacement, no smog, good gas,
and a non spreadbore carb, it was common to see Cadillac make 19-20 mpg.
But a 500? Not even in his wildest dream.

I played fast and loose with the displacement. The early overhead valve
Cadillac v8 engines were 331 cu.in. The carbs were 4 barrel carter's. The
venturi size was 15/16". Both primary and secondary were the same size.
They did very well on fuel, better than the right angle Stromberg 2 barrel
carb on the low price models. Later on in the 50's, Cad had dual 4 barrels,
as well as 3 two barrel set ups. They had higher compression, and fairly
radical cam timing for the day. They darn sure would move those heavy
caddy's of the day. Particularly with the iron case 4 speed hydra-matic.
Strong tranny.
Premium fuel for sure.

while not a GM product, I had a ford pickup truck with a variable venturi
carbeurator that got 18-20 aroundtown and slightly better on highways,
Ford and everybody else went to tbi and the variable venturi went away, My
truck had a 460 engine.
