Thinking about switching to a different air compressor after my Dana tired quickly. I've checked for leaks and all is good on that front... What are your thoughts regarding other compressor types. ViaAir 480c caught my eye.

Is it easy to fit a different compressor where the Dana used to sit?

I just bought a 450c, reasonably happy.
the 480 would only be better.

Oilless compressors are noisy beasties though.

I hope it doesn't fail in 1000 miles!

I bought a Viair 350-C from Jim B several years ago and am happy with it. It is a little slow, but is a 100% duty cycle unit and has given me no problems since the install.

Andre,

I have been running a Viair 480C for 4 years in Double Trouble and it works well, I would suggest you wire it through and 80 amp
relay. Use the lead that currently powers the Dana pump to control the relay. Use the same size wire as on the pump from a power
source to the relay and the relay to the pump.

Here's a complete kit on eBay for $214.95 with FREE SHIPPING!

Full URL:

Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35caa5ca29&vxp=mtr

Tiny URL: http://tinyurl.com/qj6ro5v

Yes, it is easy to install it where the Dana was.

Thank you for the informative response, Rob. The kit you sent a link for includes a 40 amp relay...

First of all, and forgive me for asking, but what exactly is the function of the relay?

Secondly, is the 40 amp relay included in the kit not adequate? Hence your recommendation of an 80 amp relay?

Thanks again for your feedback...

See it's all a matter of current drain and air capacity. Here in the US,
we always look for thicker steaks, fatter tires -- you know, the Binford
Complex. I feel a good pump yes will pump the coach up fast but also do it
using a reasonable amount of current that will not suck the life out of the
rest of the electrical system. There is a compressor using a York
compressor on a Ford starter motor. It will "Pump You Up" right ow there
brother but you can feel your coach getting it's life sucked out while it's
running! And you had better have the motor running to fire it up! That's
really cool and heck, you could help pump up an 18 wheeler tire with that
thing but that does not fit the electrical system you have on board. You
need a compressor that does the job without effecting other stuff of have
allowances made to operate it.

I now use the 380C Viair. It'a THE cost effective way to make pressure
with 12 volts. This model needs no special circuits, I do modify the
original Power and Electro Level systems for more current yes and we can
talk about that later but in a factory configuration, the 380 does a good
job and makes the entire system stable. You can get these all over the
place-- let your wallet support the community---.

On the mods:

Power level gets a relay controlled direct power from the battery. Use the
original compressor power to run the relay-- Use with a 40 amp.

Elaectro level gets it's compressor power to the relay back there not from
the pitiful 10 ga. wire from the front but from the living area electrical
system through a 40 amp fuse. There are other small things but that's the
biggest deal.

On both I change the regulator to 110 psi on and 145 psi off. This way
there isn't a hole in the system to go up.

The ole V2 motor is cute in a hit/miss motor kinda way but as important as
on board pressure is, I really want something else under my butt. Hey,
take 4 of the ole compressors and make an 8 cyl radial motor for display!!!

Andre,

My recommendation of the 80 Amp relay is an Oops.

The last air pump I looked at was even more powerful than the Viair 480C, it put out enough air to run air tools. It's designed and
made for the guys that have the cars that hip hop down the road; it's overkill for a GMC.

There is a pressure switch that turns the pump on and off; IIRC on the OEM pumps (Thomas and Dana) it feeds the power directly to
the pump.

The larger volume / higher pressure range Viair pumps require more power and the wires from the pressure switch can't handle it.
Therefore you use the pressure switch to control the relay and wire the pump to a source of more power / amps.

The OEM system of feeding the pump direct from the pressure switch is marginal. Especially on a 40 year old machine. The OEM system feeds all the current through the internal wiring and the ingnition switch auxilary contacts. It's pushing the limits of that system. By using a relay that 20 amps or so current is delivered direct to the compressor. Thus removing that high current from the ignition switch and avoiding the voltage drop of the marginal size OEM wiring. The compressor runs better and the ignition switch is happy by not carring that load. It's an easy to do win win.

Looking at the specs, the 40 amp relay is more than enough to do the job. An 80 Amp would be way over-kill, but still effective.
I've used several of the standard 40 Amp relays to power things in the GMC. No problems (yet).

I've had very few problems with these Bosch style relays. The few problems I've had, or seen, have been on relays with no identification on them as to who the mfr is. I've decided if the mfr doesn't want to admit they made them I don't want to use them.

Only other problems I've seen are when the terminal end is mounted up. This applies even if they are not directly exposed to water. The any condensation cannot get out and will accumulate.

Does anyone have experience with the Viair 420c ? it has only 33% work rate but it makes almost twice the volume so it should fill up the system faster.

I use the 480 C ViAir compressor in my wireless remote air system. It has a
100% duty cycle @ 100 psi. That is the upper limit of the control system.
The compressor is just loafing along at that pressure. It is capable of
twice that much although at a 50% duty cycle. It is made offshore, which I
don't particularly like, but so far, nothing I have found made in the USA
compares with it in performance or price. Current draw is about the same as
the Dana, perhaps a bit more. Conductor size and length play a big part
here. Shorter and larger is best. 40 year old conductors and connections
are not a good thing with high current flow. So that is where the need for
relays comes into play. Just my 2 cents worth.

I have a Viair 275C that I installed about 4 years ago. It has a 25% duty cycle and that is plenty.

Yea, the question is what are we building here. If you want "more" fine
but some other things may need to be changed like supply voltage, switch
contacts, etc. I do like the idea that the pump can run all day and not
smoke but as Armand pointed out, you don't "need" anything more.

Sometimes it's hard to do as much as is needed. I mean isn't more......
better?
