To all and everyone (particularly KenH):

I have finally found a good use for those little pieces of Brother TZ tape.
I use them to label the UP side of USB cables.

Like many others (I suspect) I have a plethora of USB cables lurking everywhere I sit.
Without very close attention (seldom available) there is a 50% chance that it will be wrong side up when you go to plug it in. I once had a cable that came with a little holographic sticker on one side of one end. I never got that one wrong.

Just the other day, I was looking in the case that the labeler travels in for protection and convenience. Well, inside were a collection of said snippets. When I am working on someone's boat, I have to clean up after the job is done. White, black, silver and clear were there as a assortment of sizes. And the scissors that live in that same case. As I shook them to one end to corner to empty them from the case, the USB cable (I use my lap top to make fonts and sizes match existing panels) also fell out and the LED (recently replaced the incandescent) lit up. I started cutting and sticking.

The first dozen or so cables in close proximity have been tagged, only about another 99 to go.

Matt

Thanks, Matt. I DO have more than a few of those snippets to dispose of
since I've been unable to figure out how to splice them together for label
making.

I should have thought of that when I recently went on a rampage of
labelling USB A & USB B & Mini-USB & Micro-USB & HDMI & Mini-HDMI &
MIcro-HDMI & HER Samsung Phone & My Samsung Phone & about 10 other
indistinguishable plugs and their mating sockets. STILL can't figure out
what hooks to what about 50% of the time -- much less know which side is up.

Ah but USB connectors are a trinary polarity, did you label side 1 or 3? You need to label side 3?

Side 3 is the hard one because of the Heisenberg polarity uncertainty, meaning the location of side 3 isn't known until the first insertion attempt where upon side 3 is instantiated in the lowest entropic state which is usually commingled with the state first attempted.

Cause you know you have to try three times to get one in no matter how you start...

FYI...

It's part of the USB standard that the top of a USB connector be marked with a USB logo. So *most* cables are already marked. If a manufacturer strays from the standard, all bets are off...

Also, in many cases - the logo is a raised version that can be felt, without even looking at the cable!

Excellent idea, Matt. I also use my labeler, to add to Ken's long list, to label all the little wall warts that enter the house with phones, tablets, etc. In my defense, I have a collection of wall warts that I will not dispose of for fear that they power something that I'm actually using.
