Hello All

I am in a quandry
I have a 78 Royale side bath center kitchen, with a Ragusa trans pan. When I check the fluid cold, it is at the add line, when running, barely touches the dipstick. I have done the modulator thing a couple of times with rig level. Of couse burnt my arm on exhaust trying to get modulator out quickly after running engine. maybe my dipstick is too short, modified to front access panel. can somebody measure their dipstick and let me know the correct length, mine is 54 inches long to end of filler tube
Thanx in advance for your help

Ron,
Can you clarify?
Are you checking it cold with the engine running?
I believe that the fluid should always be checked with the engine running...

Model doesn't matter or even if it's a GMC. This is how to check fluid
level.

Don't check it cold. Only check it with it running.

If it's oem dipstick and oem tube, should be correct. Have you changed
anything other than pan?

There is something wrong here. 54"? That is 4.5 FEET. The normal dipstick is less that 1/2 of that length. This must be some kind of aftermarket add on or the number is wrong.

I drove a GMC one time with a remote trans dipstick. It was mis-calibrated by at least 3 quarts. We were adding trans fluid at every gas stop and the trans was blowing it all over the place. We finally did the remove the modulator routine and ended up a 7 or 8 foot diameter puddle on the ground. At that point we moved the coach so I could lay under it and reinstalled the modulator. Then we restarted it and marked the dipstick. We had no problems after that for 2000 miles.

Hi guys
Somewhere along the line the dipstick was extended to the front access panel next to the oil dipstick. So when engine running trans in park, fluid just visible on tip of dipstick.
I have run the engine to warm the trans, then shut down, and quickly removed the modulator, to drain excess? Fluid then replaced modulator and started engine again...still only showing on tip of stick??? Any ideas?
Thanx ron

Well you got the level set right. You need a longer dipstick or need to cut a bit off the dipstick tube so, when seated, the dipstick goes down farther in the thans.

Hi Steve

you are right, that just seems too logical, silly me.
Will check with wrecker first for longer dipstick as tube will be a bear to get at
Thanx For your reply...Ron

Ron,

Cut it off on the front end. Should be much easier to get to. That is what I did on my Kingsley. Went back to stock on the Buskirk.

Ron,

A small tubing cutter is what I used. Measure twice and cut once. You may find you are cutting off a vent hole. If so replace it.
