That is what we call them anyhow in the fire service. Reading the post about axle bolts got me to thinking what else I should check as a new owner . I am taking my first long trip(600 miles round trip) and want to check my coach to maximize the enjoyment..
I am expecting lots of good feedback and it is all well appreciated
Thanks in advance .

On thing I suggest that you look at if you never have is the 3 bolts mounting the lower ball joints. These will be rivets if the ball joints have never been replaced. If they have been replaced they will be bolts. I would check them to make sure they are tight. I have found several coaches (including mine) where they loosened up. It only takes a few minutes to check them. I check mine once a year or at oil change time. Another thing I check is the exhaust manifold / header bolts. Again it only takes a few minutes.

So you let the cat out of the bag huaaa! Jim G. agreed to be my "lab rat"
for a new cruise control. I have been seeing a trend on the Rostra cruise
systems we all have been using to update the systems. Seems like they work
pretty good for 3-4 years-- then something happens and the main unit needs
to be replaced. Well, it does have a year warranty but in that rostra
tracks all that by serial number and now that I feel pretty certain that
the unit will fail, I hate getting that call. Hey, we're big boys, things
don't last forever but when they go bad some feel it their duty to lay such
a guilt trip on me "well, I bought this piece of junk from you, if you
don;t give me another one -------------". Now Rostra is refusing warranty
claims-- if it's one day past their warranty, click-- there is air on the
line. They cancelled the dist. we have looked to for over a decade mainly
because he was %%$##@ up a storm in our behalf. Hey, they don;t support
me-- I don;t support them, it's simple!
This new one has no "dip switches" to set, it's a learning system. Takes
about the same install time but the cpu is not in the engine compartment,
it's inside so maybe the heat won;t cook it. The control unit runs on a
big watch battery and comes with a second one, it's a module made to velcro
to the steering wheel spoke. The guys put Jim G. in , it fired first time
and everyone driving it says it's got good "feel". Hey, it works-- I can
loose a looser manufacturer and maybe our luck will hold on these. The guy
supplying these probably knows more about cruise controls than anyone in
the business-- I trust him.
I'm making sure Jim K. has the contacts and will be carrying the unit when
we get all the right components together. Still uses a pulse generator off
the speedo cable. Stay tuned, all this is not finalized at this point. We
have installed one-- it works well now we need to document the install and
get the set ready for sale. Let me know if you are interested.

Yes,
We will be trying out the new unit soon.
When Bounds take the time to rope me in a deal, I never say no as he knows
things that I don't.
I agree that having the controls in the engine compartment is a source of
problem.

The remote on the steering wheel sounds like the system I've used for the
past 4-5 years with my GM Electromotor II junkyard CC. Works just like in
a Cadillac. :-)

Sergio,
For me, when I was a new owner it was hoses. We have so many... propane to my refrigerator failed last year... bubbling (soapy water) out of the side. Brake. Power steering. Oil cooler. Oil fill elbows. Heater hoses going back to water heater and dash heater. Carburetor/EFI hoses. Vacuum to transmission. Vacuum to heater control. Brake vacuum. Fresh water at the pump. Vent hose for the fresh water tank. And of course gas hoses. One I look at from time to time is the separator valve hoses in the front of the rear wheel well on the left side. I guess you could say, "rubber rots".
If my coach is on cement or asphalt I look for drips... even when getting gas. Lately, no drips. Ha, will probably go out and find a puddle in the barn.
Have a great trip.

Sergio,
In my opinion static pre-flight inspections are not adequate if you don't drive the coach regularly and recently. For sure inspect all the items that others have suggested and then take a serious test drive to make sure the components that you visually inspected are actually working properly.
We see many Black List requests from GMCers who start a long trip and develop problems (presumably after a pre flight) only a short distance into the trip.
In your case a quick drive up I-15 to Pala or even Temecula would put a good strain on all the mechanical systems. Run the Onan and the roof ac while under way. Check out the dash ac and heater.
If something breaks on your pre trip rolling inspection that's a good thing. Easier and cheaper to make repairs at home at your leisure rather than in the dark of night on the side of the highway on Murphy's schedule.
Hope you enjoy a trouble free trip.

This is not a system scavenged from a Men's Mall, this is all new-- using a
learning program. I have been installing Rostra cruises forever and
generally speaking I can install and diagnose them now so fast-- this is
when you see reoccurring issues start piling up. You guys have one each, I
see a pile more than that. I have been hoping for a better system for a
while, when Rostra stuck their collective heads in the sand-- it told
seve3ral people along with me something had to be done. The Rostra works
well until it doesn't and then it is done. Kinda like fuel injection...
I'll stop...
So yea, this cruise has some exciting features, this is why I am getting
Jim K. involved. If it pans out and we should know soon, distribution of
this cruise control should go to benefit if not me as much at least any
profit needs to stay in our community. I will tell you the cost of this
complete system will be very fair. The first guy who tries to weezle
around the accepted and proper line of distribution on this product will be
hurting the community in general.
I am going to work hard to prove this set up then Jim K. is going to invest
in our future and will inventory the pieces/parts for us all. I will sell
them at the same price as he, shipments will come from his inventory . If
we were to do this on pieces/parts we all know we need to keep these things
on the road, we all would go a long way to truly keeping those parts
available.
So guys, don't call and ask me the brand and model # to source it, the GMC
community will be the source for this product with an instruction sheet and
set up specifically for the GMC Motorhome.
Yea, got a little wrapped up this morning, sorry. I have to help David G.
to secure 2 of the fallen few while he convoys his 9 GMC's to Burning Man.
Can you dig it, 2 of his "friends" bailed on him before he left Florida--
one throwing the keys into a vacant lot! Now that's bad form-- if you
can't gather the beans you thought you could, at least you should not stand
in the way..... So as a part of the GMC community I'm going out on a
search party this morning to secure the 2 coaches.
Any drivers out there from Gainesville to Burning man?
