Hi guys -- I just signed for delivery of my new thermostat and water pump from JimK.
. Can we get in there to replace the pump without removing the radiator?
Have any tricks to share or sage advice? (We already know the fan has to come away first)
Wondering if that leaves enough room to get in to that pump...... it looks tight.
thaks in advance,
B Grandoe

Hope you got a timing chain, too, since you'll be in there close.
No need to remove the rad. Just the "horse collar" shroud. Then theres
plenty of room.

IIRC there was post on here a while ago that said it could be done from the top using nothing more that a 1/2 in wrench.

Pull the fan, pull the pump. Hopefully someone else will chime in.

On my 77, I did not have to do anything to the shroud. Put a belly board across the hatch, and it's an easy install. I used a 3/8 ratchet with the appropriate socket and an extension if I recall correctly. It will take longer to re-adjust the belts than install the water pump.

A few words of caution about Olds water pumps. First, remove the old pump
and note where studs are used, as well as self-tapping 1/4" screws. Where
the screws are used on the lower part of the cover, be sure to use
something like "the right stuff" on the threads. They penetrate the cam
cover, and can leak if not sealed. Carefully match up the new pump with the
old one. Be certain that the impeller is the same, as well as the reach of
the clutch mounting flange on the shaft. When you get the pump, you usually
will find several different gaskets in the box. Match it with what was used
on the old pump. It will leak if you don't. Do not over tighten the self
tapping bolts, you will strip the threads in the cover if you do. Other
than that, it is a straight forward remove and replace deal.(grin)

Jim,

I vaguely remember something about OEM water pumps with 4" impellers wouldn't that would be what you'd want?

It takes more than 1/2" wrench.
3/8"
DOnot need to tamper with the radiator, just the hose.
Drain the radiator level and hang the lower hose upward will save some time
fillling and emptying the radiator.remove the Fan /cluth as a assembly and
lean it against the radiator insid the shroud.
If you know wat to do, then ou can do it without moving the thermostat
housing, otherwise you should do so.

Having just done this three times, I needed 1/2, 9/16 and 3/8 sockets and wrenches. YMMV.

My wood hatch cover, opened and slid rearward away back from the dash about a foot sufficed as a "belly Board", allowing me to reach the front of the engine with two hands if needed.

really helpful if you have an assistant to handle the draining of the coolant underneath while you remove the rest of the stuff in the way.

My horse collar is gone, so I just had to remove the 4 bolts from the water pump pulley holding the fan and pulley.

power steering pump - three bolts. Un mount and slide to the driver's side with the hoses intact.

remove water pump.

Make sure you have right gasket for the water pump. Trust me, you don't want to get good at this...

76 Birchaven - "Wicked Mistress" - New engine, trans, alum radiator, brakes, Sully airbags, fuel lines, seats, adult beverage center... those Coachmen guys were really thinking about us second hand owners by including that beverage center... Columbia, SC.
