For all of the good that this coach has going for it....... It also had just under 5 pounds of useless wire running throughout it. The longest runs were from under the dash ALL the way to the back bumper. They weren't for trailer lights either as I left those installed. I pulled everything including an old electric fuel pump relay with all of the associated wiring, which I imagine is leftover from an electric pump to help out the carb it used to have.

All day long, from about 9am to 4pm pulling wires and cutting zip ties which probably numbered in the 200+ range LOL.

Got it done though, will be rewiring the tach, voltmeter, and tranny temp gauge tomorrow. They worked but the wiring was messy and had wire nuts.

Go for OCD!!!

Yep Glenn it is OCD neat now.

Just got finished rewiring the Tach and the other accessories about an hour ago, got the dash all put back together and I am pleased as punch.

Got to be ready to go by Friday, our next trip is to Fort Casey State Park out on Whidbey Island. I am loving this thing!!

Way to go, Jared. That's a job I need to do. I have dozens of wires going to nowhere and several more that are way longer than they need to be.

I'm planning on retiring on the proceeds from the sale of the scrap copper. Smile

Oh oh. That pile looks to be about 1/2 of what I put in. I hope the only thing that saves me from being the "dreaded PO" is all the additions and changes have been documented on the wiring diagram and additional diagrams. Also I have everything labeled. I may have beat KenH for labels. Labeling matches the diagrams. Any wires abandoned and not removed are labeled as to original function. Did I do all of this for the NO? Nope, for me. If I didn't do all of this I would not be able to figure out what I had done.

That's smart, I just labeled the wires I had to run to power the accessories, the accessories are marked + - I G etc. And other than that and the wiring for the injection everything else under the dash is stock.

Does anyone (i.e. Painless?)make a complete replacement wiring harness for the GMC (or is there an off-the-shelf one that can be made to work)?

Is there one for the Automotive side? One for the house?

Not that it matters to me at this point but (even though my GMC had been 'totally re-done) I always thought the wiring - at least, aesthetically) was kind of sketchy.

Jim,
The wiring harnesses do evolve over the years and are not necessary the same for the chassis side and the coach side was different between models and years. No one make a complete wiring harness for the GMC coach, you would need to know when changes were made and at what TZE number. What you need to look at is the additional wires that are not a part of the original harness and follow and work those wires first to see if they are live and have importance or dead and can be removed.

Jim, I have repaired a couple of burn job wire harnesses. One was so bad
that I had to remove the harness from the coach and make a complete new one
using the connectors that were intact as well as the firewall connector at
the fuse block. Both were contaminated with dry chemical fire suppressant.
Talk about a hair pulling nightmare. The only hope for a new harness is a
donor coach that came from the same upfitter. As far as I was able to
learn, replacement harnesses are no longer available, but I DID NOT CHECK
WITH CINNEBAR. They might have some nos stuff. I grew up on 6 volt ring
terminal real rubber insulated braided cotton overlaid conductors. Don't
want to go back to that stuff. It would crumble under your fingers and wear
and chafe down to bare wires. When the thermoplastic insulated harnesses
came into being, they looked great for a short time, then colors faded,
they became brittle and fell apart. Way bad stuff. Early push on connectors
corroded and lost what little spring tension they had. Troubleshooting
became difficult. It seems that now manufacturers try to hide all harnesses
inside of duct work. That is a yea! Boo! deal. Out of sight but hard to
access when changes need to be made or service needs to be done. Throw self
diagnostics in and whoa baby, brave new world.

Its actually pretty easy to figure it out as you said the year and a few other things.  I particularly like 73's, real boxes of chocolate! Also, its not hard to pick out after market wiring.  If you have a grasp of what the new wire is connected to and what direction the wire heads out too, the connections made tell a lote about who did the work.  I gotta tell you I pulled 14 relays with 2 big boxes full with more I just gave up on.   There are 3 compressors to the air ride system with each bypassed when the old one gave up!  That's still there, just no time....  Most you just trace one wire at a time... use common sense and know under all that stuff there can be a reliable running machine...
