What's the best tire for my 26' 78 Royale. I only need 2, I am assuming, put them in the rear most tire ?....also, anybody know where is a good place to get them...I am in San Diego County.
How much are they?-roundabout is good enough.
Thanks in advance

Sergio Mora If you have 16.5" rims, the only game in town is Firestone TransForce HT 8.75R16.5s, if you can find them.
If you have 16" rims, 225/75R16 Load Range E light truck tires. Poly sidewalls (AKA "ragwalls"), not steel sidewalls. Whatever brand you pick, someone will have a negative tale, someone else will have a positive tale. If you are one of those people that tries to avoid stuff bought from certain foreign countries, ask the tire dealer which ones come from where.

Unless your going to put on several thousand miles a year, stick with
Firestone or BF Good rich.
Michelin and Goodyear are rather pricey and last longer tread wise, but
your going to replace them every 5 years since it sits around a lot .

Sergio,
Have you changed wheels to 16"???
If no, there might be some imports or Firestone Transforce HT. About 400$ mounted and balanced.
If you are looking for 225-R75*16, LRE - read on......
Years back we had tire wars here that lasted for months.
Summary,
Except for the Michelin lovers, the best ride comes with a steel tread belt, and fabric side walls.
Several of the better choices are now out of production.
Some are running import tires that I could not get any price advantage on locally.
Take that along and see what you can find.

I bought a set of 16.5" Firestone Transforce from Oceanside Tire last October.
http://www.oceansidetireandservicecenter.com/
He was able to get them in a day or two and they ran just under $200 each including mount and balance.

I bought 7 BF Goodrich Commercial T/A all weather 225/75/16 LRE's thru
Amazon several weeks ago for under $166 each with free shipping. All were
built in week 15 or 17 of this year. I paid Les Schwab to mount them for
$8 each, I bought 4 oz of balancing beads for each wheel at $8 per wheel
and Schwab added them to the wheels when mounting the tires.
JR Wheeler 78 Royale NC/OR currently sitting on the Oregon coast in 65
degree weather.

JR,
Those prices are real attractive. How did you find a local dealer willing to install them? We don't have Les Schwab around here.
The BF Goodrich Commercial T/A tires are a big improvement over the Michelin and Goodyear G159 all steel tires I've had in the past.

Are the date codes on the "good" tires the same as the "bad" ones. Usually
folks buy in sets because more important than the tread (we don't wear out
tires, we rot them off) so date tells you when to replace-- if 2 are bad
there is a good chance the rest are really old! Don't play with tires, you
are driving a 26' (or 23) Corvette. The lower body material is the same.
Blow out a tire on a Vette and the body damage will never end! Because of
our body construction just know your tires are less than 5 years old AND
are in good shape.
PS, where you buy the tires are as important as what they are-- you want
options and a friendly tire store when you have any troubles. Buy from and
have the tires mounted and balanced (trued in my case) so any troubles are
their troubles! All that also effects how much it costs you to have good
tires on your coach.

On tires: When I bought the Eleganza II it had 12 y/o 16.5 tires on
them. Replaced 6 of them (didn't do the spare), and it cost me including
installation and everything less than 1300USD. And I was very happy to
have new tires after driving on the interstate for maybe 30 minutes and
seeing the first car with a blown tire. That sight was not nice (at
100F) and I had to witness cars with blown tires over the course of the
2600mls more often than I would in Germany during a full year (or
three). I was *very* glad not to have tried the trip with old tires.

If you need 16.5" I just received 6 at El Cajon's Al Archard Tires. Took
them 1,5 days to get them. Very professional, very helpful. Say 'Hi' to
Ray, and tell him, the GMC did arrive in Virginia in one piece.

Ken, in this case you are right but for the wrong reason. On 4 wheel vehicles, new tires should always go on the rear for stability reasons. On 6 wheel vehicles (tandem or dually) new tires should always go on the front-again for stability reasons. FWD or RWD has no influence on the stabilty issue. After I wrote this article, the industry has changed its practices including Discount tire, AAA and even the NHTSA website:

Bob,
How 'bout that -- never thought of it in those terms. Thanks for the
education.
So both the rear-wheel drive Lexus and the front-wheel drive Honda should
have the best tires on the front. Though, as you suggest in the article,
it would be unusual for me to not replace all four at the same time. :-)

The last time I was at the auto department of Wal-Mart, if only installing two tires, they would only put them on the front!
I wonder how many of the infamous Ford Explorer roll-overs were caused by blowouts of the rear tires that brought about uncontrollable oversteer.
