Am hoping someone out there has put together a basic list of tools that may be required to perform simple roadside repairs like swapping belts, airbag replacements, and whatever else may pop up that doesn't necessarily require a tow.

Jared,

There have been several, but one is posted over on the GMC information page.

There really isn't much you wouldn't think of if you just thought about it. Much of the consideration is what you would be comfortable tackling at the road side.

Hello Jared,

when I planned the Seattle -> Farmville trip, a lot of people came back
with great information on what to carry.
> Am hoping someone out there has put together a basic list of tools that may be required to perform simple roadside repairs like swapping belts, airbag
> replacements, and whatever else may pop up that doesn't necessarily require a tow.

One mentioned the following items, that are all that were needed by me:

* Allstate RV Roadside assistance
* Credit card
* Cell phone

:)

I would modify that personally to AAA+ with an RV ryder. They will take
you anyplace you wanna go, even help you push it into the lake if you
like. Tow services that decide what repair center you should go to is not
good for someone with a GMC motorhome. If they want you to go to a shop
you do not know-- tell them to ask the shop if they have ever worked on a
front wheel drive 30+ year old motorhome --- if they say what is that, go
somewhere else... if they call it a P-30 chassis, go somewhere else... if
they ask "What can I do ya for",,,, run away!

Real information, go to Harbour freight to get one of those complete tool
sets (@ $40), get tools to remove your lug nuts, a 2.3 ton small floor jack
and a 6 tone bottle jack. A cheapo digital volt meter also from Harbour
Freight, 10' of 12 ga. hookup wire, a roll of duct tape and a 12 volt
compressor again at the cheap tool place. Build in "countermeasures" for
alternator, fuel system, generator, rear suspension, 3 fan belts, module,
coil and pickup, a fire suppression system manual and automatic, all fluids
and a rag to wipe your hands.

That with the stuff above and some redeemable Karma and from there the fun
can begin. If you have to bring a tool trailer stay at home and keep
working on the coach. You should have already replaced the alternator,
starter, hoses, carb, dist, water pump and all that mess and you should
know their condition. leaving home with any part on the coach you do not
know -- first person--- is a mistake. Do not need to be a mechanic, just
recognize what's going on and have a plan.

I know this is a question on many folks minds, I hope this has helped...

Jim Bounds

New 100a alternator

Starter was replaced with the engine about 15k miles ago, still has the stickers on it

Hoses, not yet, but all the coolant hoses and fuel lines are supple (even the hoses running to the water heater), am going to finish replacing all the fuel lines under the hood just because I can and the rest will be done over the winter.

Carb, nope..... Fuel Injected with new pump and new before and after filters.

Distributor was also replaced with the engine, already have spare module and coil.

Water Pump was also replaced with the engine.

I do plan on replacing the belts cause that seems way simpler in the driveway than the highway.

Seems like I am pretty close. I have all of the tools mentioned on the list, the coach even came with a brand new 6 ton jack still in the box.

Speaking of jacks, it also came with the original jack and chain...... is that something I should even bother with or should I leave it at home?

Thanks for the info Jim,

Jared

Keep that original jack and chain. Eric Tanner told me the story when he shredded a tire a couple years ago. It took out the airlines to the bags and knocked off the valve stem to the other tire and left him sitting on the bogie. The only thing that lifted that coach up was the original bottle jack and chain.

Consider adding a small rubber pad to knell on, while working on the side of them road. Beats kneeling on gravel.

Hacksaw blade, if not the whole saw. My dad always had one with him it seems.
And a towel...

Story;

Back in the 70s dad rented a small boat to cruise the Glen Canyon river, dad drove. The canyon has vertical walls 200 feet high.
It was Dad, Mom and us 3 boys I was 10ish. about 1/2 hour into the trip we sheared a prop pin on a log. The boat had a box of pins but all the ones that could fit were missing. Dad decided that it was too far to row. So he pulled the hacksaw blade out of his pocket and cut the pin out of the oar. Dad had to jump into the river to get the pin in the prop, but fit it did and got us home.

So bring your hacksaw blade Smile

When the pin shears, it leaves a longer piece in the middle than the two end pieces -at least on OMC motors. Back in The Day, I've gotten the family houseboat back to port more than once by simply swapping the pieces of the pin and going real gently.

While the oilcloth tablecloth makes a good transportable soddy creeper, we have now found all these foam political signs are even better, though not nearly as roll up transportable.

For a ground mat I use the 2 foot square interlocking foam floor mats. They are about 1/2" thick so you can be comfortable even on top of gravel. You can make any size pad you want in 2 foot increments and easily take them apart for storage. Easy to clean wipe grease off of them when finished with the dirty jobs. They are sold in most big box stores and are inexpensive.

My comments on not bringing the plethera of parts is in that you should
have descent reliability in the parts on the coach. Don;t wait for a key
part yo fail, renew those things and you will logically have less issues.
Just no reason to take those chances. On the FI system, be sure you have
the components on the system as spares, carry them, a diagram and a
diagnostic tree. You or whoever is willing to work on the thing will need
all that info for sure,

Jared, just remember, I have the jack chain and no jack, while you have a jack with no chain. We either have to travel together, or you can buy the chain for about $10,000,000. Sound good? Surprised
