Dash Air Conditioning "O" rings [message #258200] |

I am getting ready to rebuild my dash air conditioning system. I am installing a new Sanden compressor and receiver/dryer (from Applied GMC) but will reuse the original evaporator, condenser and hoses etc. after flushing them.
It just occurred to me that the system uses a number of "O" rings to seal the hoses to the various components. Can anyone tell me if the "O" rings are special for the application. I suppose I could get one of the Jim's to send them to me, but time is of the essence as I want to get the job done by Tuesday.

Yes, they are special in the type of material that they are make out of. You want the thick green HNBR O-rings and they are available at most auto part stores, AZ, Oreily, NPA and others.

I did a similar conversion a few years ago. I checked my notes and I found that there are three sizes of o rings used that are very common. Unfortunately I did not note the part numbers. Just take the old ones to the parts store and match them. Get the green ones. But there is one more odd size o ring on the expansion valve capillary tube. I had an Auto Value store order it. They had to order a pack of 10 but opened it and sold one to me for $.60

Richard,
I have to do the same thing one day. Probably not before this summer is
over.
I do hope that you've already thought about documenting and taking plenty of
pics and adding it all to your great web site/blog. It will surely prove
helpful for those of us that will gladly allow you to blaze the trail. Haha

Just this week did complete A/C R&R on my new-to-me Geo Tracker. Went to Autozone or Advanced Auto and bought a complete set of "O" rings for very little money, (less than $10?). Have enough for at least two more similiar jobs. Just walk in and ask for ones to fit GMC.
Thanks to JohnN and FredV for their very able assistance. Without friends, I would never get anything done.

Thanks Rob and everyone else that responded to my question.
Now I need to figure out if I can flush the evaporator and condenser in place or if I have to remove them. I think I can get the hoses out without too much trouble to flush them.

Then I need to determine how to figure out how much oil it needs, I have a second evap under the couch and have no idea how much it will take. Except for the 2nd evaporator, that is exactly what I will be doing starting today. I figured it would be a messy and air compressor intensive project and you have confirmed that. Thanks for the reply.

That's all good and yea, buy an "O" ring seal pack, it's short $. I would
add though something I feel is really important-- think about this:
You are rehabbing a what 30 something year old system. GM engineers never
figured anyone would be using this thing this long, at least they did not
make allowances for materials age. Plus add the fact we are not even
pumping the same sort of chemical that the system was designed for. NO ONE
has any idea on what effects age and the different coolant being used has
any ill effects on the system. Parts are not the expensive part, it's the
time you must carve out of your loaded life to do it if you say "I want to
do it myself". Hey, it's not rocket science, you can probably muddle
through it to give you something to do but guys, someone who does this all
thetime can't help but do a more complete job if they are doing what they
should. That has to be totally understood. If you want to give yourself
something to do go for it but if you want a completely operating and
reliable system you need to do t more things--- 1.--- have some AC guy do
the job, pay him a fair price because a good deal is a fair deal-- the
world goes on and a mans time-- even yours is worth something. "Free work"
will end up usually costing you the most. 32.---- replace ALL of the
systems components. You have to reuse the condenser and evaporator if they
are good but the hoses-- come on man you know the rubber in them is
petrified and being exposed to stuff they were never made to see. One
grain of rubber coming off inside the hose will clog up the expansion
valve. The drier is the trash can--- so how long has it been sense that
trash can lid was even opened???? And that original expansion valve has
been squirting a liquid/gas for what 30+ years, they are cheap, give that
original part a rest!!!!
Say you don't do any of this, you slap it together and it holds a vacuum,
now the question is and the next thing to look for is when the next weakest
part lets go like the plumbing in your house. You kow, everything is
working fine for 15 years, you notice leak under the sink-- figure it's a
loose fitting. So how DID that fitting come loose after 15 years? You
touch it when the monkey wrench and the whole thing falls on the ground!
Fix it all at the same time of simply keep your tools with you because the
rest of the system should come apart about-------- now!!!
Guys, do it all, do it once and then worry about the next system and do it
completely too. This is how you build reliability into your coach and not
just systems that are working---- for now. I hate it but I see this every
day!!!
