Thanks everyone for the postings on this thread. Since my last post I have
continued to have problems that seem heat related making me suspect vapor
lock in spite of the electric fuel pump I installed after the fuel tank
solenoid. I removed the inline fuel filter I put in next to the carburetor
which seems to have improved fuel flow a bit. I am considering re-routing
my fuel line around the mechanical fuel pump altogether to avoid the engine
heat created there.
Any thoughts about the wisdom of this idea or other possible vapor
lock road fixes?

Thanks -
Brian

If you had an external filter next to the carb it is likely best you removed it. I would leave the factory filter in the carb as a final trap to catch any crap in the lines. The primary filter should be before the electric pump. I prefer doing away with the change over valve and using a separate pump for each tank mounted near the tanks outside the frame rails. I did away with the mechanical pump and ran the fuel line up the rear of the engine with the line insulated in the area of the engine. This seems to have helped the vapor lock problems but I have been too busy this summer to check it extensively.
