In dealing with a failed governor gear it appears it would be really handy to have a spare governor gear assembly on board. And it seems like they might be in short supply. We are planning a trip to several junk yards and will search for governor gear assemblies.

The question is will any assembly off any Toronado 425 transmission work or could it be rebuilt to work. What should we look for? And are there any other transmissions that we could look for that would have a rebuildable governor gear assembly core that would work on our GMCs. We're thinking to get the assembly including the cover. Anything else we should try to recover in the process?

Mickey, Eldorado 67 to 78 governors will fit or trannys too. When ever I see one I grab it. Like two in the last 10 years.
Good hunting!

The U-Pull -it in my area won't sell the governor separate from the
transmission. I tried but they wouldn't let me have it.

Well, I was wondering about that, not being able to pick off parts of the tranny. But one of the places we frequent has trees growing up between the seats and engine compartments so they may not be as fussy.

I would advise people from using used governor gears as most have seen the
life.
Plastic type component in a transmision in a motor home i going to see
higher temperature and they disintegrate.
New ones are available, so it would be best to get new.
I do not carry a spare gear as I make sure my transmission runs cooler than
most by 20 degrees.
I have seen articles in auto/truck publication eluding to this.

JimK - I believe they are referring to the entire governor assembly. You make a good point however that used governors should get a new gear installed. This includes used governors carried as spares. Easier to install this gear at home rather than on the road.

Mickey - the cover is a part of the governor assembly and cannot be removed without some cutting of the metal cover. It all comes out as one piece, floppy cover and all. (this is one of the things that makes working on these a bit of a problem.)

Jim, yes, we would try to find the entire assemblies and then rebuild them with new governor gears, or use the core as the core trade for your rebuilt assemblies. If we could find the complete assemblies we would save them from the crusher and add to what seems to be a short supply of the governor gear assmebly cores.

Mickey and All,
There are subtle differences between the governor used for the motorhome and the one that is used for the cars. The ones that are taken off car transmission are useable but can be upgraded to motorhome specs.
