My alternator over charged on a recent road trip unbeknown to me. Engine battery was ok, but the coach battery back by the generator took a beating. My battery posts have the type of post for clamping as well as a stud with a wing nut, the negative post with the wing nut burned a hole in the battery case the size of a quarter under the wing nut portion. My in line electric fuel pump also took a hit. But my dash wiring is still intact. I have a combiner, shouldn't that have prevented the batteries from over charging? Just asking.

I now have a voltmeter installed.

Tough luck, Bruce. However, I think the burn hole is more likely to have been caused by a slightly loose connection at the wing nut. With such a situation, what should have been a very low resistance connection was quite a bit higher. The charging current would cause a high voltage drop across that resistance which COULD develop a lot of heat at the connection and the subsequent damage to the battery itself. I had a similar experience with the house battery of my travel trailer.

I suggest using an actual hex nut to replace the wing nut in the future.

X2.

I had a similar failure on one of my 6V GC2's, but more than likely was due to excessive cranking the coach with boost on. My coach had a hot start problem... Luckily it only melted the post, and costco took it back at 13 months, one month after the warranty expired.

I might add that the house battery did boil over as my battery tray was
corroded after just cleaning and painting it.
Engine battery was ok.

Then I suspect a dead cell (or two) which would put ~ 14V across four or five cells. Sure to boil the battery dry. No effect on a good chassis/engine battery. Been there and done that, too!

Bruce,

I agree with those who say your problem was more likely a high resistance
connection at the damaged battery.

That aside, no one answered your question about the combiner protecting
against high voltage. SOME of the Yandina combiners have a Blue lead which
can be connected to cause them to disconnect at 14.2 VDC. NOT ALL have
that feature, and it could not protect the battery (usually the chassis
battery) directly connected to the charging source. I think it's unlikely
you have that protection.

Also, if your alternator produced enough voltage/current to cause the
damage you describe, it should have also boiled the other batteries.

What charge voltage does the new voltmeter show? Generally if the
alternator ever produces overvoltage it's because of an internal failure or
disconnection of the external sense wire (which should NEVER be allowed to
occur with the engine running). And it's generally not likely to self-heal.

Bruce,

I had that problem and took my Ragusa front triple battery tray out and to help prevent the problem I:

1) cleaned the corrosion off with liberal amounts of baking soda
2) had it sand blasted
3) had it powder coated
4) painted it with several coats of auto body undercoating

That was two years ago and not a sign of any corrosion yet!
