Well, here we go!

This morning I set out to fix the stuck caliper. This needed to be fixed so that I could move the RV to the lot in a day or so. This would also allow my wife to work on the inside as soon as I was finished.

So I chocked the wheels and got my jack and jack hook ready to go. As you can see from the picture, my jack hook doesn't fit my coach. This is either a problem with the hook or with the coach. I am leaning towards a problem with the hook. As you can see, the angle that the hook sits forces the top of the jack against the fence designed to keep the hook from sliding off. Since the fence is only welded at the corners, the weight of the coach has forced the jack head to bend the fence outward. You can see it in the picture. What isn't very obvious in the picture is the fact that the paint is now chipping off at the bend due to the metal bending and stretching.

I finished the job as quickly as I could so that I could lower the coach before the jack got worse.

Hopefully I can get a replacement from the manufacturer, but if not, it looks like I need to buy a new one. Any suggestions?

Forgot to mention. The jack is for raising it. Once up, use stands or blocks to hold it. Never rely on the jack to hold it.

Pity, it seems to be a pretty beefy unit.

From the picture, it seems as if the actual hook is too long, or the curve of the top of the hook portion, to the pad bracket, is wrong. I wonder if adding a 1/2" steel block on top of the body of the hook part would bring the jack pad away from the bogie mount and parallel to the ground?.

I am going to look into that and at the same time have the top rewelded too.

You may want to hold up modifying that one, it seems its for the front - see Mr Fisher's post.

Here is a full picture of the jack hook in question.

http://i.imgur.com/TXeZ9qg.jpg

To my eye, that looks like it is supposed to work in the front and back. I bought it thinking it would work in both places. Let me know if I am wrong!

I also see that it is bent at the top, so I should replace it anyway.

Bob,

Even before it bent, I don't think I'd have ever attempted to use that one.
It's grip length is not long enough for either front or rear, IMHO.

Ken,

I agree...NOW.

When I bought it, I didn't know any better and took the suppliers word for it. I thought folks should see a questionable hook so that they can make an informed decision.

I guess I had better build my ramps to get under the coach because I don't dare use this anymore. I am now educated enough to be scared of it!

Your jack hook looks like the basic shape of the dual purpose hook that Jim K sells.

http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/625

It also looks to be built of similar materials as the standard adapter.

http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/1103

Tell us how you came to be in possession of yours so we can avoid ending up with one.

G'day,

I'm wondering if you have the right slot in the bogie box?

Notice there are two slots in it, the one that angles downward a bit and has a rounded end; I believe that's the one that you hook
into the rear bogie box hole.

The one that is square at the end is for the front and goes in where the six bolts hold the front clip and the frame rails together.

Rob,

Yeah, I had it in the right slot. I tried every which way to make it work. My final realization was that it was made incorrectly.
