We are leaving Saturday from LA to go to Sturgis SD. Out bound overnights in Provo and Casper. In the GMC, of course. Towing a trailer with 2 Harleys. Wave if you see us. (Actually only me. My wife flys out a few days later but does ride back in the coach.)

In years past we have done this trip, on the return we took a different route and stopped at Yellowstone. I recall a nice days drive from Sturgis, overnighting, up early and a short drive to the Yellowstone entrance, where there was a small town, parking on a side street and unloading motorcycles, riding for the better part of the day and then a relatively short (couple of hours or so) drive to Pocatello (then the next day to Las Vegas, then home).

But I can't remember the route. Staring at the map it looks like one would go Sturgis to Cody, then the next day to Yellowstone. But what I see on the map is not consistent with my recollection, and then I am not sure the best route to Pocatello from there. Does anyone have recent experience with that route they could share? Any motorhome unfriendly roads?

Thanks a bunch!

Neil

I think I figured it out, that I need to go to Bozeman and then hit the North Entrance.

That is what I was going to suggest. The north entrance has the lodge and Mammoth Hot Springs, lots of parking. Have a great time!

just curious... I know there are alot of Harly, or other motorcycle riders in the GMC group. other then this guy, how many are traveling out to sturgis, with their GMC's this year?

FYI..... I am not, but know a good number of people headed that way on their bikes next week, so just curious.

Neil, I live in Rapid City, SD. If you have any problems give me a call. I have a garage that will store motorcycles if needed, sorry but the GMC wont fit in it. I would also be interested in joining you for a ride if schedules permit. If your interested let me know and I can email or text my phone number to you. This offer extends to all GMCers that are heading this way. Have a great trip, Bob Schilling

Thanks. You can PM me the number and I'll call.

My wife is flying into Rapid City next Tuesday and we are staying with the GMC at Days End in Sturgis.

This is my 4th time to Sturgis and 3rd with the GMC. You live in a beautiful part of the country!

Best

Neil,
Make the extra effort to hook up with Bob Schilling and his wife? They hosted the Route 66 Rolling Rally when we passed through his area near Mt Rushmore. They know the area: Bob tells great stories, and is an all around great guy. They were a delightful and entertaining couple, you will enjoy their company.

There is a good campground on a lake (not an rv park} just west of Yellowstone across the continental divide and over the Idaho border. We stayed there for a few nights and drove into the park each day. Would be a great to park the GMC and take the Harleys to the park. It is quiet and not congested like the places near the park entrances.

I'll look up the name and forward it to you.

Neil,
I have spent a lot of time in Yellowstone. The North and West entrances would be good for the GMC. Don't confuse the North entrance with the Northeast entrance. The Northeast entrance would take you over Bear Tooth Pass, which includes very steep, windy, narrow roads. It would be great on the bikes but not so much for the GMC with a trailer.

It is my dream to take the GMC out West and spend time in Yellowstone and the Grand Teton. First I have to figure out how to retire. The CFO says I have to work another 20 years.

Neil,
Here's a link to Henrys Lake State Park and campground. 15 miles west of West Yellowstone- nice scooter ride over Targhee Pass to the park.

Easy Gmc access up from Bozeman.

I second the comment made by Gene. Bob, thank you again for the great
hospitality that you and your lovely wife presented us with. If any GMC'ers
doubt the fact that Bob is a great host, contact me off net, and I will
convince you otherwise. GREAT PEOPLE.

Well, didn't quite make it to Yellowstone. Left Sturgis, overnighted in Bozeman then off early on 191 to West Entrance. 11 miles down past Big Sky on 191 ( a two lane canyon road) I pulled over to let some folks pass and at that exact moment the driver's side inner CV let go. All the bolts had walked out. The axle thrashed around and I stopped in the turnout in a few feet.

Got towed back to Bozeman, GMC is at a shop apart, and we are waiting for Fed Ex to deliver the new parts that Jim K sent yesterday. If the parts arrive, we'll be back on the road today.

Checking those bolts might be a good item to add to the checklist!

One again my better half is losing faith in the GMC. Too bad because other than that it ran perfect with her aboard.

Tough luck on that Neil at least it's not the engine or trans. After my engine failure (fortunately close to home) all I need to do is look closely at my gauges or have a different sound and my wife says what's wrong now are we about to break down again. Before the engine failure she would say how long to fix it this time as I was always able to fix it on the side of the road. It is a real drag to be broke down we are lucky to have Jim K to reach out to in a pinch.

The drivers side cv joint bolts will loosen up more than the passenger side
does. Those little bolts are supposed to torque to 75 ft. Lbs. I always use
new bolts and blue loctite on the drivers side. Found a lot of them missing
and loose as well.

We came up from Phoenix 3 years ago and caught 15 south of SLC and then went right at 30 through Logan and up over Bear Lake on 89 to Yellowstone. Worked good. Grand Tetons were more impressive than Yellowstone IMHO.
