Hello,

As I get ready to start the coach for the first time in 7 years I noticed that the grommet that connects the air filter to the filter vent on the valve cover is broken, the filter vent as a very loose fit in the valve cover and pops right out. Also, I believe that the hot air pipe from the air filter down to the engine is missing. I have two questions, first where do I find replacement parts for this section of the engine.

Secondly is it safe to start it up with these parts disconnected/missing.

Thanks!

Dan

The last two GMCs that I started for the first time after sitting for a long time I had the breathers completely off and spritzed some starting fluid into the carb while cranking and they started right up. So I had both of the components you are asking about disconnected no problem. The hot air pipe fell off one and I didn't get around to dragging it out from under the GMC and putting it back on for a few months (I didn't drive it that way, though).

You DO NOT want to run it from the gas in the tanks if the gas is 7 years old. Run it from a gas can of fresh gas instead.

Dropped the tanks, replaced all fuel lines.

The grommet that goes into the air filter is what I really need. I guess replacing the hot air pipe is not an emergency.

Thanks!

I didn't see the air filter grommet on the web page. That just means you have to call and talk to a human being to order it instead of doing it online. 1-800-752-7502 Ask for pricing on the hot air pipe while you are at it.

It took me four tries to get a grommet that would work, one attempt from O'Riley's and three from Applied. In my case the problem was that the pipe from the PCV valve on the valve cover went straight into the air cleaner instead of running up the side of the air cleaner into a 90 degree grommet. I finally sent Nick a picture of my set-up and he got me the right one.

BTW, a broken or taped up grommet will result in failing the California SMOG inspection. Ask me how I know.
