In the continuing saga of my Road Grub, the passenger side lower brake caliper pin was missing allowing the caliper to drop and ride on the disc. This has resulted in about half the metal thickness in the disc flange to be machined away. Oh boy, another project.
So I have the disc and bearing spindle off the coach but while I was hoping otherwise, there is zero chance of separating the spindle and disc that I can see without pulling the two bearings off the spindle first.

The question is does anyone have bearing tool that I could borrow/rent or give me another option other than buying one new at $430?

Thank you in advance for any guideance you can offer.

Here is what I did,

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll159/lotsofspareparts/1977%20GMC%20Eleganza/IMG_20140608_122914_375.jpg

I used a 3 jaw puller, a 3/4 drive socket that had a neck on it that would not allow it to fall through the center of the hub, and a piece of plate steel that I normally use to pull impellers out of jet ski jet pumps.

Took me longer to figure out what I needed to round up than it did to pull the bearing.

It was one of those things where I had the stuff laying around to make it work. I needed to pull a few bearings but didn't have the "$430 one time use puller".

That certainly is a lot for something that may get used once or twice.

I didn't need a bearing puller..... I needed to pull a bearing......

That would certainly be a way out of my predicament. Let me see if an option I have here pans out and if not I'll get ahold of you to arrange some time to do that.

Gary,
We can lt youn use our loaner tool n/c.
I will require $200 deposit and charge for freight.
The bearing puller will allow one to pull the bearings without damaging the
bearings.

No disrespect Jim, are you implying that I damaged my bearings during removal?

I had Mike the owner of my local Napa check them out since I was considering replacement and he said they were in great condition.

What is so wrong with finding a way to do something other than what the "Manual" says to do??

Jared,
Glad you were able to overcome that bad design and get your bearing off. I used the same setup and the tips broke off the puller. I could not get the tips of my hydraulic puller under the bearing because of that retainer, so I had to use one like you used. That bearing had been on there for 40 years, I guess, and all I wanted to do was change the rotor, but THE FORCE was not with me and was in fact telling me not to mess with it, keep it as a spare, and work with my other parts instead. Too bad I didn't realize that until I had already cut the bearing to pieces to get it off. The bearing on the hub with the good rotor came off with no problem using the same setup (after I got 2 replacement jaws).

If I had purchased that $400 puller from Howard (whom I got the parts from), it surely would have broken too. Then I would have really been ticked off.

I like that home brew setup with the three jaw puller but a word of caution. If the bearing removes too easily, then the shaft may be worn and needs repair/replacement. Have it checked before re-assembly.

I had to work my arm for sure to get the first one off and my 3/8 impact made the other side come off easier, used a piece of pipe and a 6 top shop press to reassemble.

That sounds good and tight. One of mine was loose enough to pry off by hand. Lucky I replaced the bearing before catastrophic failure.

That was close!! What vintage were the bearings? Mine were Timken all the way around so am sure they have been replaced.
