I know that we are supposed to use 11mm belts but I've forgotten what happens if one uses 10mm belts. Is it just shorter life or something more serious?

They will sit too low in the groove and run on the bottom of the belt rather than the "taper" of the belt resulting in very little ability to transfer torque and result in slippage and rapid wear.

Back when I was a lube technician many years ago we had the occasional customer that would ask about a squeeling belt, it could always be traced back to a worn v-belt that was running on the bottom of the pulley.
Using the wrong width belt does the same thing.

A few years back a guy stopped by on a trip from Texas to Philadelphia. He had flipped and destroyed 3 belts from Texas to NW Indiana. I took him to Autozone. We got and installed 11 mm belts. He had no belt problems after that.

At our shop, we hve seldem run into the belt problem as long as we tighten it properly.
Keep in mind that the new belts stretch and will loosen, then you blame the belt.
The belt reps from Gates and Goodyear telling us the same and you might as well get use to it like the Ethanol in the fuel.

I read a conversion somewhere so that we could use industrial/implement belts.
Can't remember where though.

Absolutely ! Many people overlook that and wind up with several attempts at new belts and even dual pullies to correct for a worn pully in the first place.
