My daughter Heather has a Honda Fit that could be had cheap. Several GMCers own Fits and tow them. They come in around 2400 or 2500 pounds. She loves hers as a daily driver and say she wants to buy another one.

The only problem with this one is she hit a Van head on. She was doing about 10 and starting a left turn and the van was doing about 55.

She can verify that all air bags worked and when laying on it's side it only does minor damage to the car. After looking at the damage, that car held up very well.

She has a broken collar bone from the seat belt. She also has 2 broken wrists, a broken arm and a broken finger. The ER doc and the Orthopedic doc both said those hand / arm injuries occurred from her holding on to the steering wheel during the crash. She goes in for multiple surgeries on Thursday. The biggest problem is both of her arms are in casts up to and including her hands. So she can not pick up or hold anything. She can not feed herself or dress herself. She is learning how to kick doors open. The Doc says it will be 4 months until all is healed correctly. Laurie and I have spent the last three days helping her learn to do things with no hands. The insurance company told me that we did not sign up for replacement car rental insurance. I asked them who would rent a car to her with no hands available. I changed her toilet today to a push button rather than a lever and may put an electric lock on her front door with a push button of some type with a spring loaded opening feature.

So if anyone wants a 2009 Fit, Heather has one available.

Ken I'm so sorry to hear about Heather's accident! Thank God she will heal
and go on to drive again. Also, thankfully you and Laurie are nearby (?) and
can help with recuperation and recovery.

Though I haven't yet met you in person, after many communications with you I
feel as if I know you. You and yours are part of our extended family and we
wish you and Heather well. You will all be in our prayers for a speedy and
thorough recovery.

Ken,
I am really sorry to hear of your Daughter's bad luck.
Lucky (if that can be said) she has injuries that will heal but are a blasted inconvenience for awhile.
Fortunately her parents will make sure the inconvenience will be minimal.
I wish you, Laurie and your daughter Heather a speedy recovery with no set backs.

Can the fit be towed 4 down? How many miles? Very Happy

Seriously, with that kind of speed differential, she is really lucky the injuries were not more serious. Hope she has a speedy recovery.

Thanks guys. She will be uncomfortable for a while and have to go through a couple of surgeries but is the end she will be alright.

It looks like her motorcycle will stay parked until next year.

For a girl she sure gets into things. She had a dump truck back up and run over her motorcycle. She bailed off of it just moment before the truck squished it. That was 6 or 8 years ago. Nineteen years ago she split a Hyundai in half in another head on collision with a van. She had one broken leg boating a few years back, and there are a few other things that I do not remember at the moment.

Do not think that daughters are any less trouble than sons. She is 35 now going on 21.

Yes a manual or automatic Fit can be towed 4 wheels down.

This one is available.

The right front wheel is not quite straight. It has way too much camber, but the other three wheels are fine. The right rear door and roof are the only body panels that are not dented or scratched. Actually the interior is in fine condition. The car protected her very well.

I have the necessary tow bar parts to tow a Honda FIT. We towed our 09 FIT for 5 years until we just purchased a Honda CR-V 2 months ago. The tow set up is by Roadmaster. Was a great car to tow and could pack 60 cu. ft. of stuff in the back.

Sorry to hear about your daughter but glad she is doing well. The only bad things regarding the Fit are that their battery is slightly bigger than a D-cell, and you can leave the headlights on without realizing it. Not a good combination.

It is required that you have the FIT battery wired to be charged by the coach while going down the road if you use aux braking systems. I used the following with very good results. I bought just the Charge controller alone as I had all the other parts in the shop, it was under $60.

http://www.lslproducts.net/ToadChargePage.html

I really recommend this for all towed vehicles as I have had friends that had their batteries run down over a day lone tow.

I have seen bigger motorcycle batteries.

Years ago we found that the battery in our GEO tracker would run down after a day of towing it. We have a Brake Buddy which draws some current and the key unlocked to allow the steering wheel to turn also allows some battery draw.

We had to unhook and then move the GMC to hook up a battery jump cable to start the Tracker.

Then I changed my 5 pin cable from the motorhome to the toad to a 7 pin connector. I ran a wire from the house battery to the Tracker battery. I realize this puts the two batteries in parallel but not much current is drawn and only when the toad is plugged in. This has worked well for several years now.

Ken,

So glad your daughter will recover. What a scary situation, the most scary for a parent there is, that time when the news isn't entirely clear before you can see her. The air bags and passenger safety box with the seat belts have saved more than money this time. Just a relief to be able to read your post and go from trauma to hope in just seconds. All the best to your family from ours, and I know the entire forum has taken a breath and thought of our own loved ones and how precious our love is.

I have had to call a lot of parents in my career serving children telling of an accident. I have trained myself that the first thing out of my mouth, if it is true, is to say that their child will be all right, but there's been an accident. Never give the accident news first if you can avoid it. I haven't ever had to report that worst news you can report.

The Honda Fit is the hot setup for these days, if you can't get along with a VW Rabbit, A Geo Metro, A VW bug of yore, or the Samurai-Tracker, all of which are under 2000 pounds. Yes, it is one that can be towed 4 down even with automatic. So they say.

Best,

Carey

I have a Brake Buddy and wanted to provide Motorhome 12volt power to it. I also use a pair of magnetic mounted tail lights on the roof. I plug a seven pin into the motorhome. I wired the 7pin connector to a four flat which I plug the tail light wires into. I ran a red positive wire and a black ground from the 7 pin along the taillight wiring into the car and put a female lighter plug on the end of the red and black wires. I can now provide motorhome power direct to the Brake Buddy power cord which plugs into the female. This toad can be towed with ignition turned off so no power is used from the toad battery for anything, while being towed. Works as planned.

Ken, I hope all will be well ! Your note reminded me of a subject that hasn't been discussed much. With steering wheel mounted airbags, a driver's hands should be at the 3 and 9 clock positions rather than what most of us have been taught or accustomed to. It is very common to experience hand/wrist and arm injuries when an airbag goes off. I usually have my hands closer to the top of the wheel.

I realize this puts the two batteries in parallel but not much current is drawn and only when the toad is plugged in. This has worked well for several years now.

Ken,

Glad heather will heal. Airbags (the safety kind) do usually save serious injuries.

You should see if she can arrange to be a test driver for the Google Car.....Wink She is now more qualified than most.

Do her a favor if her motorcycle will really be idle for the summer (sucker bet at this point).
Fog the engine and drain the gas - at least. I have seen so many bikes turned to junk be being ignored for much less good reason than Heather has.
