Greetings all,
My wife and I just purchased an Avion. I arrived home late on July 4th with the coach, driving from Georgia to Oregon. Now we begin the long process of repair and upgrades. Due to the comments on this site which I have been lurking since March, we decided to use it as is for a season before making major changes. Fix anything that's broke and make one bed out of the twins for now. Then make changes to the interior later.
I am not a mechanic and not overly talented in that area. I am hoping to do what I can and hire others for the rest.
If anyone has a propane oven/range, in good repair, that they took out and would be willing to sell it, we will be looking for them. My wife said the oven is a necessity. She loves to cook. We also will looking for a dinette in good repair.
Now on to my two questions...On the way home I noticed fumes in the cockpit. One suspicion is the old gasket around the engine hatch. Has anyone a recommendation on what material to use to replace the gasket? The local auto parts store didn't have much to offer and I didn't see anything on Applied GMC's site.
Also, I want to place CO and propane detectors in the coach and was wondering where others have placed them.
Finally, I want to thank the many people who have put good information out here since I have been lurking. I have already learned a lot. Also thanks to Bob Stone, Ken H., and Manny for assistance on the trip home. I ended up learning more with an actual object to work on. Whoever said to use the hump on the dash to position the coach on the road gave an invaluable tidbit for driving a larger RV than our last one.
Off to the DMV today to register and title the coach and hopefully find a home for the coach to keep the Oregon weather off.

Sir: welcome...1975 Avions are nice coaches. Is it a 26 or 23?? You will have to get use to tripping over the extra step into the cockpit tho. The rear twins are unique and the table / cabinet in the rear is very nice to have. Dry bath is nice also. Driving it from Ga to Oregon tells me you got a good one. I have an oven out of an Avion that appears useable. $25 + shipping. Too bad you didn't holler earlier since Tenn is closer to Ga than Oregon. Just cause Jim Ks site don't list a part don't mean he doesn't have it. Call and ask. This GMC net is the place to ask questions, remember the only dumb question is the one you don't ask. If your fumes are exhaust leak I recommend Remflex exhaust gaskets. They seal better and last longer than any I have found. There is also a heat tube gasket beside the carb that can leak exhaust. Be cautious removing the bolts as thay often break off and have to be drilled and tapped. If your fumes are gas or oil, find and repair asap. I have a battery operated CO detector and it went off the first time I used it. My furnace was bad even tho it worked great. I have mine mounted across from a heat outlet. I think low is better as I think the fumes settle instead of rise. As for registration, I have antique tags and in Tenn are permanent. I figure any time our coach leaves the driveway it is a special event.

Mike,
Congratulations, you have purchased a coach with some unique features that no others have; one being the table in the top of the
nightstand / dresser between the twin beds. I note that you intend to turn them into a single bed. I would suggest you use the coach
for few trips as is for a bit before you do that. If you do decide to convert to one large bed remove all the parts of the twins
carefully as the next owner might want them.
You probably have not looked at the screws that hold all those parts in, they are special with heads that look like a bow tie, they
are called CLUTCH HEAD and can be obtained from McMaster Carr:
http://www.mcmaster.com/#clutch-head-screwdriver-bits/=sqx8w7
Also take a look at my photo albums and you'll see some mods I did to Double Trouble that might be of interest to you:

Welcome to the forum, that must've been a great trip traveling from Georgia to Oregon and the GMC must be in pretty good shape to make it. These old coaches just keep on going like the old Timex commercials...lol..I agree with you, make the necessary repairs and then make your changes as you go along, that way you will find what works best for you. There are a lot of great GMCers on here and all are willing to help so don't be afraid to ask because that's how you learn..Glenn

Toledo, oregon.... what a great place to own a GMC. That GMC must run and steer well, if it made it to Toledo, I have driven from albany to Newport many times, and there are some big hills, and some crazy corners. I remember coming up to a mustang upside down on hwy 20, and stopped to help. the state troopers provides the homeowner on that corner with a case of road flares on his porch for those events.
what makes the detectors/alarms special for RV use?
I am not a big fan of the 12V RV smoke, or CO detectors. I have one that went bad early, and they are not cheap to replace, and they will drain down the battery over time. Plus you need to find a way to run a 12volt circuit to them.
with the 10 year Lithium ion one's coming down in price, My opinion say install those. CO2 detector low to floor, and smoke up high.

gas alarms are a little more limited to find.

Your results may differ but the single (double) bed in the rear is a PITA. Darn near impossible to make up and very inconvenient when one or the other needs to go to the head at night. I'd buy a really nice coach with rear twins that would fit my long body.

The Dr wrote on Tue, 08 July 2014 07:52...On the way home I noticed fumes in the cockpit. One suspicion is the old gasket around the engine hatch. Has anyone a recommendation on what material to use to replace the gasket? The local auto parts store didn't have much to offer and I didn't see anything on Applied GMC's site. ... You may or may not have noticed the email subscribers whining about you not having a location in your posts. The "Location" field of the forum does not propagate to the email listserver. You will need to put it in the "Signature" field in your account settings, or you will get their complaints over and over, ad nauseum. To avoid redundancy, I removed it and left the "Location" blank when I put my location in my "Signature" block.
On your fumes problem, there shouldn't be any exhaust leaks close enough to the engine for the hatch to be the problem. Not saying you don't need a new hatch gasket, just that you have bigger problems if exhaust fumes are coming in through the hatch. If it is a gas smell and not fumes, you need to find and fix the leaks in the plumbing from the fill spout to the tanks, or the fuel delivery system from the tanks to the intake manifold.
The only place exhaust should be emanating is the tailpipe out the rear. Once you get the exhaust system tight to there, if you still have fumes coming in, you want to start looking at sealing the windows that open.
