After my engine rebuild I consciously installed the Toro dipstick in order to get in the habit of having to open the engine hatch for every pre-flight. After the dipstick broke, I wanted something that was a little easier to use. With the trans dipstick, and my engine fire extinguisher head in the same proximity, a flexible dipstick was very attractive. An easy out on a socket and universal, a couple of extensions and patience allowed the end to be extracted from the block...only the first bubble was seated.
Found this mod on an Oldsmobile forum. This is a Lokar ED-5008 for a '79 and up LS-1
First I made a mold of the dipstick hole.

Then ground the aluminum to fit since the olds dipstick hole is closer to the block than this Chevy LS1

I needed to remove an inch to match the original length.

Installed...had to bend and twist the mounting tab to properly align to valve cover screw. I did this with the header installed, access from the back of the block. The most difficult part was seating the shaft in the hole with the o-ring installed. A long screw driver and a couple taps of a hammer and it popped in.
