This subject had "drifted" to air horns so, here it is back with some clarifications & comments.

The reason there were no refer vents (roof & side) on the 1973 early 74s was that the GMC Engineer in charge of that responsibility forgot. That Engineer was John Locklin who had much going on at that time and it just plain slipped by. How do I know that, John told me so. You may also note that the preproduction vehicles had vents and the early production MHs had body framing for the vents but they were not installed.

The early refers were primarily 12/120V so this probably caused less of a problem than absorption type would have.

The Dealer Service Technical Bulletin 75-TM-9 (link below) was to be implemented if the customer complained about refer performance.

Note the baffles in the design link below. They allow 1" free space between the baffle and coils for air flow. My guess is that many of the baffles are likely missing with the replacement of reefers and contribute to their performance.

Thanks Bill, having just installed an absorption refrigerator, my installation went well, and the additional storage was welcome, and the documentation your provided was extremely helpful. Hope to see you at the next Colonial Travellers rally, either Lancaster or Cape May.
