Jon,
So sorry to hear all your woes. It's going to get better!
The long pole in the tent right now seems to be the brake problem. Here's
my diagnosis: On one of your brake pads, the friction material separated
from the metal base. That left you with no brakes until you pumped the MC
enough to extend the piston on the caliper with the lost pad. When the
metal base reached the disc, you got brakes back -- but with metal-to-metal
contact. I'm hoping you'll be able to merely replace the front pads and
have your brakes back. Even the scored disc may be useable. If not, I'm
sure someone can overnight a replacement disc to you. Sure hope my
diagnosis is correct. If so, let us know the source of the failed pad.
As far as the weak fuel pump, I'd try installing an external pump just
ahead of the main tank to see if it's possible to pull through the in-tank
pump (whose wire I'd transfer to that external pump). If so, carry on. If
it can't pull through the installed pump, I'd keep the external pump as a
spare and still carry on, using the Aux tank only -- after all, you'll only
be about 6 gallons short of a "full fuel load". Just stop more often. I
wouldn't delay my trip just to pull the tank. (But when I got back I'd
certainly make sure that could never happen to me again -- just as I've
done by avoiding the temptation to install in-tank pumps.)
If you've been here long, you know I'm well experienced at unexpected
problems. Don't let them get you down -- the end result is worth the
trouble.
Good Luck!

Jon
While you have them out cut the floor so you can get at the pumps w/o having to drop the tanks. I had to get at one of mine and it was a 15 minute job.
