Hi all good news, I am the proud owner of an Antique GMC. When registering it today I asked what the benefits would be of registering as an antique and was told that next year my tags would be less than $20...so I said sign me up..lol.. My friends will surely make some remark about the tag being for the driver and not the vehicle...lol.. Anyone else have an Antique Tag on their vehicle? Now if I can just get everything fixed and get it on the road... Glenn

Glenn,
Most of us in Michigan have either historic (ten year renewal) or authentic - actual year (for as long as you own it) plates. There is a restriction that then the vehicle can only be driven to events, shows or for repair (except August you can drive it all you want). So, I just carry a GMC Calendar. There is an event somewhere all year long and nothing in the rules says we have to take the short way.

Now, if I could get it insured by one of the classic/antique carriers, I might even make a dent in the agreed value that I carry on the coach.

I run an "authentic" Michigan plate that is good for life and cost me $35. As Matt says, between events and repairs I doubt I will have any problems.

Many many people have classic tags. Topic of discussion here many times so lots to read if we search. I am in Missouri. I paid 29.00. That was a one time fee. No more inspections or renewals as long as I own the vehicle. I fit the criteria spelled out in the Missouri rules for the gmc and my 65 fastback mustang. On my 66 vdub, it's my daily driver so I don't qualify. The dang Prius cost me 55.00 a year. That is twice what I was paying for other gas vehicles. Must be some kind of special tax on hybrid. Going to pay it today but will research before next renewal.

I have had three different State Vintage Plates on my GMC motorhome.
First was Virginia - $50 for life - Repair, event and limited occasional local driving (accepted as 250 mile radius). You must have a registered daily driver. No daily driver, no antique plates. Best part, no personal property taxes, no annual automobile inspections or emissions testing.
Second was Mississippi - Don't remember the cost, but it was nominal. Plates for life. No other restriction. Amazing the amount of junkers on the road in Mississippi with Antique Tags. Most should be in the crusher. Mississippi has no vehicle inspections.
Currently, Alabama - don't remember the cost again, but it was notional. Plates for life. Has the usual repair and events restrictions. Alabama has no vehicle inspections.
Once you leave the State, no one seems to care.

I'm in Michigan and am chicken to do that. Since I use my GMC as a mobile office and home away from home during installations at manufacturing companies, I am reluctant to have historic plates. It would be my luck to try and explain to a cop how I am on my way to a rally when I've been seen parked next to a job site for days at a time. I'd rather pay the money and have one thing less to worry about. Different strokes for ..... as the saying goes. Maybe when I am finally able to retire I'll go that route. I don't know about the "except August you can drive it all you want" rule.

I still think its a stretch, for some of us to have historic plates. This is from the Michigan Secretary of State website:

"Historical and authentic license plates

Michigan has a long and proud history as the automotive center of the world. Many residents enjoy restoring and collecting vintage automobiles, trucks and motorcycles. Since 1956, the state has issued historic and authentic license plates for antique vehicles used in parades, fairs, car shows, swap meets and other events.

Historical vehicles
A historical vehicle must be:

26 or more years old
Owned solely as a collector's item
Used only for events such as historical club activities, parades and car show

Note: A vehicle registered with a historical or authentic plate cannot be used for routine, day-to-day transportation."

My GMC is more than a "collector's item". And for weeks at a time, I use it "for routine, day-to-day transportation."

I wonder what happens if there is an at fault accident and someone's lawyer starts looking into all the modifications done to a GMC (brakes, suspension etc.) and the possibly fraudulent license plate usage to avoid paying license fees. I have enough to worry about without worrying about being caught.

They typed in wrong hp on our Prius. 25.00 fee. I knew something was wrong.

Richard, I am with you. Would not do it if we did not fit criteria and everything on the up and up. Could cause problems down the road. Lots of vdub guys have classic plates and drive cars to work, in Missouri. Mo. Rules say, no driving to work. I know one of them got pulled over and ticketed. Gmc is a little different but in Mo. Must fit same rules as a car with classic plates.

In BC - there are HUGE restrictions on the condition and not allowing any modifications to the vehicle.

We have two classes of these plates:

1) Vintage - supposed to be only for shows, parades etc...

2) Collector - pleasure use only (would include camping - if that can be considered "pleasure"), but the vehicle is not supposed to have ANY modifications that weren't from the factory or period correct. That includes radios, brakes, fuel injection and on and on...

And since our insurance is so tightly coupled with vehicle registrations - I decided not to risk it. I've heard too many stories that deny claims based on insurability when the policy was opened.

YMMV
