I am trying to remove my alternator and there is a sleeve that is preventing me from removing it See photo.

Is that sleeve supposed to be entirely inside the mounting bracket or am I missing something here?

the photo did not come through for me, but if you are talking about the back side of the long mounting bolt, it is just a spacer, not really a sleeve, and does not go into the mountings at all. did this 3 times last week because of faulty rebuilds from O reillys. is the alternator loose and pivoting on the top mounting where the long bolt is, or is it secured underneath still? That big head bolt (5/8?) underneath is the hardest to see and get to.

Bill,
Not sure I'll do a great job of describing this. The sleeve fits and remains in the endframe of the alternator. It is supposed to be a light press fit. But, due to being a steel sleeve inside of an aluminum endframe, the dissimilar metal corrosion tends to freeze it into place. You should be able to pry the alternator off the bracket with a big screwdriver. If you are putting the same alternator back on, you might try a lot of penetrating oil, a c-clamp and a socket to put a little more clearance in between the sleeve and the bracket. It will then move to the right place when you tighten it up.

Just tap the sleeve in until you can remove the alternator.

Emery, do you mean tap the sleeve into the bracket?

I believe that sleeve is short and goes into the alternator. So, if it's too far in you may have to tap it from the back side. It's been a long time since I did this so my memory might not be clear on this.

Thanks for the help guys. I did find that by pushing the forward arm on the alternator downward it opened the rear arm enough that I could get a screwdriver between the bushing and the bracket and was then able to push the bushing back enough to get the alternator free.

I did find on my setup (a 403) that pushing the bushing into the bracket is not an option as there is only a small recess about 3/16" deep that will accept the bushing.

Just so anyone else finds them selves in this situation and doesn't understand, like I didn't, what they are dealing with here is a picture showing the alternator with the bushing pushed back.

On my '78, there is a slight notch in the mounting bracket that when the alternator is rotated to the correct spot the alternator will come off. The little sleeve on the alternator was the same on my first and a replacement alternator. Maybe it is supposed to be a little puzzle to remove?

I do not remember this issue on my '73 (it has been a few years) and haven't removed the '77's.

The cover was not rubber. It is a metal plate with a couple of clips on the inside that hold it in. I would not worry about it. Many GMCers are missing it. Manny once said that it didn't cause any problem if it was missing.
