I just stumbled upon a nice site (in German, but probably very easy to
understand), that allows you to enter a couple of locations you want to
visit, plot the course, and it will show you a great elevation profile
that you'll have to conquer.

The Mountain Driving Guide books (East and West) are valuable trip planning tools also.

A similar function is available in English if you have Google Earth installed. I used to plot an alternative to driving over the Grapevine on I-5.

It would be great if the GPS units gave grade warnings. I did a climb in NY that I thought I was going to lose the tranny before we got to the top .

There are some special GPS units that claim to provide guidance for
lorry and RV drivers.

Steve,
Curious as to what alternatives to the Grapevine did the system give you? The choices are few and most still have substantial grades and will take you far longer depending on your final destination.

I'm not sure how accurate that is. I just plotted my favorite non-gmc route to Little Switzerland and it showed an 12% grade the last 5 miles. Now three of the last five are climbing on 226a - some of it pretty hefty switchbacks, but the the last two are along the summit, relatively flat +/- 50 ft. google earth showed it all as steep grade. And 12% sounds like a lot to me - but I am a flatlander, what do I know. Looks like I'll have to take the Parkway out of Asheville in the GMC.

76 Birchaven - "Wicked Mistress" - New engine, trans, alum radiator, brakes, Sully airbags, fuel lines, seats, adult beverage center... those Coachmen guys were really thinking about us second hand owners by including that beverage center... Columbia, SC.

Gene,
Well, Google Earth didn't 'give' me alternatives per se. I was in Bakersfield at the time as I remember, and I chose to route my trip over to Santa Maria and then down along the coast.
